searching for a monster fish for 50-100 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its going to be a predominantly plywood tank with acryllic front... and im still not 100% sure where im going to build it, but im considering a corner tank

and i was looking mostly at a spotted gar or lungfish so far... i havent looked at bowfins too much, so im not very familiar with them and their behavior, i dont know much about wolf fish either.. so im going to do more research on those two, but for now the spotted gar and the lung fish are in lead

now.. these wolf fish... the hoplias malabaricus, these wouldnt happen to be the same fish that was on an episode of "river monsters" was it? where one bit a stick quite viciously?... that one was much larger, do they not grow as big in captivity? or is the hoplias malabaricus a smaller relative of that?... because that was a VERY cool fish and that sort of aggression makes up for its lack of a general primitive look something like the gar has

No, I believe that was a hoplias aimara.

yeah.. i looked it up.. it was hoplias aimara... also known as the "giant trahira" whereas the malabaricus is also know as "trahira"... so i guess its just the little brother of the big one... still pretty cool fish... seeing young ones sold for about $65

one question i have though... how fast do these things grow?... im looking to build the 100+ gallon later this summer.. so if it doesnt shoot up to full size so fast, perhaps i could keep it in a more standard aquarium until the big one is built

some other questions i forgot to ask.. will either the bowfin, wolf fish, or spotted gar attack anything as large, or larger than itself? and if they do is it something territorial or will they actually do it to eat something too big to fit in their mouth?

second.. i have a 10 gallon tank left over from a few years ago.. would any of these be small enough to live in this for the next 4-6 months until my 100+ aquarium is finished or am i better off waiting until that is done?

Y build it? You can pick up 125 gal tanks on Craigslist Cheap just look every day. I have seen them go for as little as 100.

i live in a very remote area... there isnt even a craigslist for my area, the closest one is well over an hour drive.. easier for me to get 1 1/4 sheets of plywood and acryllic or plexiglass sheet... also, i like building things myself

I had my erythrinus erythinus in my 125g with my 2 oscars and the didn't get along at all, The wolf wouldn't attack unless provoked, which was very often, but would leave the oscars with some pretty big gashes. Since then I've moved him to his own 40g and he is a completely different fish. He hides much less and is very interactive. It is a blast to feed rosies and red cherrys.

will any of the fish mentioned, or that ive mentioned actually thrash around a larger piece of food like ive seen erythrinus erythinus do, out of the gar, hoplias malabaric, or the bowfin?
