searching for a monster fish for 50-100 gallon tank

will any of the fish mentioned, or that ive mentioned actually thrash around a larger piece of food like ive seen erythrinus erythinus do, out of the gar, hoplias malabaric, or the bowfin?

Gar no.
Hoplias yes, they are just like erythrinus but bigger & meaner.
No experience with bowfin but if they are that closely related to snakehead, yes.

One fish in a medium tank by itself could prove pretty boring. I use to have a snakehead in an indoor pond that would fit your bill. Unfortunately they are illegal now. He was about 14 inches and out grew the 100 gallon he was in. After awhile he became boring as he would just sit in corners of the tank and feeding time he would sometimes not eat right away either. You should check out some large Afican haps. They have great colors and you could get a few nice ones in a 125.

im really leaning towards the hoplias malabaricus right now unless i get more information on the bowfin first...

i just need to figure out if i can set up a 10 gallon grow tank for this right now while the main one is built....

also calculated if i use a 48x24" piece of plywood each for the front, back, and bottom, that would leave me two 24x24" pieces for the ends giving me a total dimension of 48Lx24Hx24D and a total of 120 gallons.. then i can reinforce the bottom with lumber.. add legs and have it free standing on its own.. put a shelf underneath

leads me to one of my other questions... if i got a small Hoplias malabaricus.. a few inches long, how long could it live in a 10 gallon tank before moving it to the large one?

well, i finally had an opportunity to do more research on the bowfin, and i really like that one so far.. so that really might be my choice at this point... the two ways im looking to build a tank one will give me 120 gallons, the other is 150

to get my fish.. im not going to buy it... ill probably just catch one locally with a minnow trap at a young age

im going to keep an eye for some now... put it in my 10 gallon tank... did even more research on this beast to find it grows an average of 0.4mm a day, which over a six month period is 2.8 inches, so id have plenty of time to get my main aquarium built before i need it
