Hey All,

I am intently searching for any Paretroplus species I can find for purchase. Does anyone have recommendations on rare fish dealers or breeders that might have some?

I've already sourced P. kieneri from Dave's Rare Aquarium Fish, and may be able to get P. menarambo from Dave as well. But I can't find any other species out there.

Would appreciate any leads you might have!

Thank you,

Evan

Dave's may have others seasonally.
I have sourced many others throughout the years, but am out of touch because I now live in Panama

You'll need a very large tank for menerambo (about 300 gallons), mine reached about 14" in 2 years, and gtt dangerously aggressive with each other in 6 ft tanks.
Same with P maculatus, at about 2 years I had to move mine from a 150 gal tank to a 400 gal kiddy pool to curb aggression.

Thanks for the response duanes duanes .

I would dedicate my 8' 450g to these fish long-term, if I'm able to get them. In the meantime I'll just monitor Dave's stock list.

You seem to have a lot of experience with these fish. Any advice you might share? Around keeping and breeding them.

I've seen other posts of yours where you recommend higher flow for the P. nourissati.

Thank you sir,

Evan Rifkind

Yes my nourisatti were very aggressive, and I believe its because my strength of flow was lacking.
I bought 6 from Old World Exotics in FL, in a combined order with a few other aquarists. At the time (late 90s) a minimum fish order was $350.00) from them.

With menerambo (in that great size tank) I'd get at least 6, and never change the dynamic of the group.
When I messed with the dynamic of my group, by removing just 1, all hell broke loose with a number of deaths ensued.
I've also worked with Paratilapia, and Ptychochromis,
Madagascans are probably among my favorite (yet most challanging )cichlids to work with.

Wow thanks for the excellent information and awesome pictures. I feel like I've stumbled upon a treasure trove of experience with you.

Could you tell me a bit about how you kept and/or bred the kieneri? Those are the ones I already have. Breeding is years away, but I'm excited to learn what I can now.

Sorry for hammering you with questions!

Thank you,

Evan Rifkind

Jose Gonzales, he is on Facebook, has some beautiful Madagascar Cichlids. I purchased several from him on Aquabid.
