you are aware that all black ghosts are blind and nocturnal...8 inches is not a baby but an adult about 1 year old...they do everything through electrical impulses, if a fish bites the ghost on its tail the ghost sends a slight shock to the fish as a defense. I would leave the cave in as that is now the ghosts home and removing it can cause stress. ghosts are very sensitive and hard to keep, not for the beginner by any stretch.

Black Ghost knifes are by no means hard to keep.

Just require a different attention that other fish

From what I've read up on, they love to hide but I'm sure it'll get used to you sooner or later, it just takes patience.

I've had my Rocket Gar for a while now, about 8 months, and it's only been in the past couple of months that it's gotten used to me. It now knows that when I open the hood and tap my finger on the surface that there's food. I've even had it try and bite my finger and mind you it's only 5" long.

My Crayfish used to be a bit awkward with me but now when I place this wooden cabobb stick with a shrimp at the tip into the tank it runs out and latches onto it.

It's all about patience and trust really. I know you care a lot about your fish and I know the BGK will grow to you eventually.

mine proved to be a very slow grower. I've had her (i think) for probably 4 years and is only 11 inches or so. Part of that has to do w/ my infrequent water changes up until about a year ago, though. If there is not much to hide in, mine would come out in the ghost tube, but otherwise, it hides until the lights are out or the moonlights are on, which I would recommend making.

My BGK rules my main tank so I don't turn the lights on most days. He is just more comfortable that way. I have noticed that when I put a new 'log' the tank as a new cave, if I have it facing a window he will likely not use it. He has several places to hide and since he is still growing I am always looking for bigger and better caves.

I have two that are like hollow logs. They are meant to float near the top of the water - protection and hiding places for fry and small fish I think. I using fishing line and tied it to some big rocks!!! works like a charm.

I brought home the 2nd log - cleaned it and put it in the tank. He tried it out a couple of times and then would not go back. I moved it while cleaning the tank and suddenly he seemed to be there more than anywhere else. Once I realize that I had the end of the log pointing out towards my livingroom window - there was too much light.

I don't care what you say about the transparent tubes... my BGK knows when there is light and would never use the 'ghost house' that I originally bought for him.

It takes time. Mine has been getting extra feedings lately... and he really likes that. Now everytime I go near the tank he is out doing almost backflips waiting for me to feed him.

He actually caught 4 sinking wafers tonight - before they hit the tank floor... pretty good when you consider he can't really see.

Give him time - talk to him - and he will become your trusted friend. Just don't ever get between your BGK and their blood worms....

is that why any advanced aquarist rates this species difficulty level at 4 (5 being the hardest to keep)...these require more attention than most FW species, let your prams stray a tiny bit and see how quicly the ghost is affected...just because you have gotten it down dont be misleading to others, as I stated this is not a species for beginners

How/What do you mean 'making' moonlights?

Not to sound goofy or anything but if i put her on the defense will she nip?

Also I don't want to scare her silly, and set her back or anything.

When I was handfeeding him/her a shrimp. After feeding my ghost I was about to rearranged his/her cave to suite him best but instead of going away from his cave, he/she immediately bit me. It didn't hurt at all I was just shocked that he bit me. I think the shrimp essence was still in on my fingers, so he thinks that I am still handfeeding him.

sounds to me like ur doing everything rite. and b-e-autiful fish.
