I went to a local fish store that I have never been to, and they had a lot of neat fish, however I saw one thing that made me a bit angry to know that this happens.

I have known about people doing hybrids and other weird things to get new looks, (I don't especially agree with bending nature either) but this really struck a cord...

I can't imagine the pain these fish went through to get these ugly "tattoos".

Am I wrong to have been upset by this?

If I am wrong about what this is, if it is natural or painless, please correct me so I don't have to feel so put off by it... I would rather be completely wrong about how these fish got the markings than right.

Does anyone know about this? I am curious about why it is done, and if it is popular in some areas. Or are there any stickies on here that I can read about it? I would like to know!

just type in "tattooed fish" in the search bar on. Not popular on here for obvious reasons but they wouldn't keep doing it if there werent people actually buying them.

unfortunately your right.. it's a tattoo..
the reason? supply and demand..
as long as people keep buying these fish.. people will keep producing them..

yup.. ive seen them.. there be more coming in with Chinese new yr coming up.. They color them with chinese characters for good luck and crap.. I pisses me off and sadness me when i see them....

Totally disgusting in my opinion:screwy:

luckily i have never come across them at any of my shops or shops in the uk, but i dont agree with it for obv reasons.
very sad and u should respect fish a bit more even though it is a nasty hybrid that cant even shut its mouth.

mate i have come across on some of these dyed fish... the shop was on A24 towards epsom.. i believe doing this in UK is illegal. after about a month the manager got sacked, shop was closed down, re-opened with a different name.. a mate of mine (an LFS owner) said that dyed fish has been banned since 1999 here in UK, but still some shops does it..
