education...education...education... is the only way you're going to see these fish vanish from the hobby. as stated.. supply and demand. forums like this help people become knowledge about what a true abomination this is. If for no other reason using a cruel and painful practice to create "beauty" Sadly a vast majority of these fish live short lives and what have to be painful deaths due to secondary infections from these physical alterations. I've spoken to a fair share of LFS owners/managers. sadly some know perfectly well how these fish get their color, and scarily some have no idea. And I'm not even going to get into hybrids.. personally I have no use for them. But some people do. it's selective breeding... not physical alteration like you see in some "bat-man" ray rip offs, docking of the ears or tails you see in dogs, de-clawing of cats. Soreing in show horses, or "Gingering". These things are all done to make it "easier" on us humans to keep these animals, or astetically more pleasing, or "show" appropriate.

ignorance is bliss, but even abit of knowledge can be scary.

I Whole heartedly agree. thats hy I started this thread... Education about the issue. When I saw this I felt like I had to show it. I plan on trying to get the word out more to people who think this is OK. cause its NOT! I appreciate everyones response... I am happy to know so many people are against it as well. Thanks. :)

I wonder what colors the non-dyed Blood Parrots are in. I like Blood Parrots (this practice of tatooing makes me sicker) and I want to get one when I have a bigger tank...but it's hard to tell what's dyed and what isn't :irked:

Tattoo'd ones on the right:

Obviously I disapprove and I don't get it, to me it just looks like they have made an ugly fish even uglier!

i saw these at my LFS it really saddend me to see a store i once trusted would tolerate this....... i mean really they look stupid if you can't appreciate the fishes natural beauty then dont own fish

i know the livestock manager at my LFS and i was appalled that he even allowed this hes a really knowledgable guy next time im in there i should probabaly talk to him about it.

Hybrid parrots basically come in yellowish and orangish colors. Some of them are naturally (well "naturally" isn't really the word, but you know...) pretty reddish, but no redder than that last picture posted (those ones even look a little to red to me). If it's a deeper red than that or a purple, green, blue, etc. it's dyed. When young, they usually start out brownish with a barred pattern and change as they grow.

Along with tattooing, they also do other injections like the neon spinal cords seen in "painted" glassfish as well as dye dipping (which I hear involves an acid bath to remove that pesky slimecoat so the dye can soak into the body). I don't know how accurate it is, but several times I've seen the statistic that upwards of 80% of the fish die before they even make it to the store, yet this is apparently still profitable

*snip*

But are the dyed ones tatooed to be that whiteish color?
And also, I believe it was Bigspizz had a pair of two-toned Blood Parrots. There is considerable variation in the natural color of them too.

gets my blood boiling when i see this, i am glad to say though that in my area at least this seams to be pretty much gone, they were all over a few years ago, but have seemed to stop. I dont know if anyone has read articles on how they do that, DIP THEM IN AN ACID BATH TO REMOVE THERE SLIME COAT, TAKE THEM OUT OF THE WATER AND INJECT THEM WITH NEEDLES, THEN THROW EM BACK IN THE WATER. i read somewhere like 80% dont even make it out of the farms where they do this
