Seeing this really upset me....

As long as there is a product that people will buy, there will be someone making that product. Its that simple. Those are deformed hybrid parrots.... clearly that wasn't heinous enough... now they are tattooed deformed hybrid parrots.

education...education...education... is the only way you're going to see these fish vanish from the hobby. as stated.. supply and demand. forums like this help people become knowledge about what a true abomination this is. If for no other reason using a cruel and painful practice to create "beauty" Sadly a vast majority of these fish live short lives and what have to be painful deaths due to secondary infections from these physical alterations. I've spoken to a fair share of LFS owners/managers. sadly some know perfectly well how these fish get their color, and scarily some have no idea. And I'm not even going to get into hybrids.. personally I have no use for them. But some people do. it's selective breeding... not physical alteration like you see in some "bat-man" ray rip offs, docking of the ears or tails you see in dogs, de-clawing of cats. Soreing in show horses, or "Gingering". These things are all done to make it "easier" on us humans to keep these animals, or astetically more pleasing, or "show" appropriate.

ignorance is bliss, but even abit of knowledge can be scary.

if possible, talk to the manager and boycott the store making sure you tell them why. Supply and demand...MANY fish die in the process of doing this...it's bad enough that parrots are engineered mutants (and i really like when people ask what their "natural" environment is), let alone dying them. Education is key so stamp out ignorance one moron at a time.

It's almost as bad as tail snipping...where they cut of some flesh from the caudal peduncle so it doesn't grow back :(
Blood Parrots are tough... but nothing should go through that crap :irked:

luckily i have never come across them at any of my shops or shops in the uk, but i dont agree with it for obv reasons.
very sad and u should respect fish a bit more even though it is a nasty hybrid that cant even shut its mouth.

same for me. ive lived all over the UK and luckily have never encountered anything worse than regular hybrid parrots.
what has happened to these fish is truely sad.

here in nyc its very popular and yes it is very disturbing. i actually had a discussion with one employee that confided in me. he said its food coloring injected into the fish he also said the dye fades away after "some time-a couple months". what they do is tell people (that dont know of course) that the fish are a special breed "very rare" and triple the price----ive seen purple , midnight blue and even black/green parrot fish and they do this to many different breeds---needless to say i dont support any store that sells them

If a fish is over the age of 18 and wants to go get a tattoo, that's his business. It's all about self-expression.

I wonder what colors the non-dyed Blood Parrots are in. I like Blood Parrots (this practice of tatooing makes me sicker) and I want to get one when I have a bigger tank...but it's hard to tell what's dyed and what isn't :irked:
