I am a beginner to the stingray market, but have been very sucessful with other fish tanks. I have been involved with fish for close to three years now, mainly chiclids. I have been researching stingrays for about two and a half months. I have done lots of research on general knowledge, temperment, and care, but figured the best information I could obtain where from people who acctually own them. With the numerous website and blogs I have read, I am beginning to get nervous about owning a stingray. Are they really as difficult as people say they are to keep? Is it better to buy them from breeders, as opposed to fish stores? How serious is it if I decide to add some decor to my tank? Every website stresses the fact that you should keep a bare tank, however ever picture of a stingray tank has rocks and plants as the decor.... When I choose to make my purchase, are there certain things I should take into consideration , or physical things I should look for when choosing my stingray? Please help, convence me that this is as good an investment, as I believe it will be......

well from what i was reading i think you are rdy, but what size tank do u have, and filtration. what kind are you planing to get. you can get an easyer one for your 1st like a motro its not that hard if you do your research and know a basic knowlege on how to care for them. i have found that i keep some plants and rocks, just as long as whats in there does not have sharp edges for the ray to snag on, also be careful with heaters, somerays can burn them selfs. and as long as you know they need clean water and you keep ur water clean you will be fine. good luck with what ever ray you get and keep us updated. oh and what size are u planning to get? oh and a tip thats helped make my ray alot more active is i added a jet in there for more water movement and he loves surfing it and playing around.

richard ross has some great books on care and general stingray knowledge great books to have... freshwater stingrays and there is a aqualog version (recomend both).... what size tank and ray you looking into getting.... as per your last post a captive bred ray is always a better choice.... btw you have a PM...

Good it releaves me to know that I am not getting in too deep, with this... My starter tank is 125 gal. I have two Ocean Clear canister filters. We have been looking more at the motoro, simply for their appearance and durability...lol! But I can't lie, there are alot of beautiful species out there that have caught my eye, but not convenced my wallet.. The heating system I currently have is the simple one that sticks to the side of the tank, don't worry, I have been looking at others but they make no sense. As you said stingrays like to bury themselves, and I think the only other options I have seen in heaters are the submerdged heater. But if he buries himself on top of it, won't it burn him? And then again, if he brushes by the one I currently have will it not burn him too? What heating system would you recomend?

I am hoping to find a pup abput 5" to 6", just so I can have a little time in my current tank... They grow slow, right? I think I remember reading that....

i keep my heaters (stealths) hanging vertical on the back of my tank.... this has been the same way for alot of rays..... i never had one burn never..... if ypur heaters are plced this way the rays cannot stay on them and burn themselves....

well i havnt had any problems, but u just never know. i have seen people on mfk get pvc pipe, bait to same color as background and drill a ton of holes in it and slide it on like a sleeve. fi u got the stuff to do something like that it would be a good idea, better to be safe than sry. but mine are stuck to side top of glass and my ray still would swim along glass and get to close or say on it for to long and it worried me so i just moved my heaters to my sump, but if i didnt have sump i would for sure do the pvc thing. i belive there is a thread or 2 about it.

Since stingrays need supreme filtration you may want to consider a wet/dry filter then you can keep your heaters in the sump...

I don't know too much about Stingrays besides the obvious fact of floor space.

Whether you think you're ready or not, you're definitely at the right site for good advice and info.
