Where could I get one? Are they hard to take care of? Do they do well with live plants? Will they eat Platies/2 inch Tetra? Could they live there whole life in a 55gallon? If not what would be suitable? If there are any better species, please let me know :)
Thanks in advance

depending on where you are they're quite easy to get hold of. easy to take care of. mine is a total glutton and eats most things I offer. Though not pellets for some reason. 55 should be fine for life depending on tank mates. mine likes plants sits on/amongst them. wouldnt trust them with small fish long term. they are generally not aggressive, but if it will fit in their mouths they'll eat it!

you might get away with the platies and the tetras if they are deep bodied. you will have to make sure the senegal is well fed. once he starts getting a little bigger he wont be happy with just bloodworm unless its alot! I made that mistake and my 4 inch senegal took out a 3 inch filament barb. he made a lucky grab for it and git its eye. then when it couldnt get away grabbed it properly and wss like a crocodile death rolling trying to tear chunks off. since then I fed bigger meatier foods and no issues. hoplo catfish are a good choice. too big to eat and pretty well armoured. wouldnt chance corys unless you can get them big to begin with. basically, provided it wont fit in the senegals mouth you should be good. nothing too aggressive though. they arent IME violent fish. what are the dimensions of the 55? maybe the senegal, shoal of tetras/ platies. couple of hoplo catfish and maybe a firemouth could work. when I had firemouth it didnt bother my bichirs at all.

To be honest cichlids arent really my bag so i couldnt tell you for sure. although from what i do know salvini are supposed to be quite aggressive/ territorial? Maybe ask in the cichlid section to get a more definite answer. Anyone else want to chime in here and help out??? If you are looking for a med/large cichlid to house with a birchir then a severum may be ok- they are relatively non aggressive, they do get a little bigger than salvini though so whether one would be ok in a 55 or not is best asked in the cichlid section

dang, senegals are as common as gold fish in petstore now. perhap they are out of season?

Maybe in England it different, but in North America and Asia that how it is!lol

Maybe you could point him in the right direction of where to get one seeing as how you both live in the same place?
