Senegal Bichir

Maybe you could point him in the right direction of where to get one seeing as how you both live in the same place?
Ontario is almost 10x the size of England, so it's impossible to point someone to where to go to find them. We could easily live 2000km apart.
Personally, I wouldn't keep them with any kind of small tetra or platy. I feed fish that size to my 5-6" bichirs every few months. They all disappear by morning. Even my ropefish will eat platies.

could also only live 20 km apart. also there will be stores throughout ontario along the lines of pet smart that could be a possibility that i have no knowledge of. there are also possibly online sources available to Canadians that I have no knowledge of. point I was trying to make was if one reads the post properly they will be in a better position to offer assistance

Hoplo catfish in a planted tank is bad idea IMO. They WILL destroy your plants...learned that the hard way.

I have 3 hoplo catfish 4 inch range. none of them bother my plants at all. giant vallis, amazon swords and crypts. that being said im sure in a full on aquascaped planted tank they would be like little bulldozers.

im actually trying to keep my eyes peeled for a ornate bichir as well, one that a nice dark black or green (almost black green) colour depends were everyone in Ontario is yes...maybe someone in the guelph/kitchener area knows of somewere that has em ...

You MIGHT have to pay through the nose for a good bichir...I paid $60(us) for a 5" ornate 4 months ago....he's now 6". In the same time my p. weeksii has grown 4" and my p. endlicheri has grown 6" in 2 months. Was the smallest, now my largest. I've read an awful lot about crappy inbred captive breed Bichirs not growing, like a 4 yr old 8" endlicheri. Mines 6 months old and 10"...all my future polypterus pitches will be from jurrasic aquatics and only wild caught Bichirs....not going to spend years raising a fish that wont grow. Especially an ornate, the largest upper jaw and best looking bichir IMO.
