Hey Bicher keepers. I'm new to this sight and to Senegal Bichir keeping. My question { I have many} but for now, has anyone used Almond leaves in a tank with a Bicher?

Just for a little info I just got my little guy Friday, he is 2inches long, I'm going to grow him out some in a 10 gallon tank before I drop him over to the 150 gallon tank which has 1 Green terror, 3 dojo's, and 4 cory cats in it.

To be honest any info on this guy would be great. I have done some research and reading up on him but there is nothing like the info you can get from those who have raised them.

Thanks

Welcome aboard
I've kept Senegal and other Polypterus for years. Senegal are one of the active species and my personal favorite. The most important thing to know is that Bichir need a low water gap of 2 inches to get air or they will drown. Also never keep them with fish such as Cichlid that can harass them it will cause stress to poly's that can't defend themselves. I agree with kno4te kno4te .

Thanks for the reply's so far. My little guy is all over the place, staying at the top of the tank for the most part. I find him on the bottom at times resting I think. I was worried of this behavior? I have read that they spend most of their time on the bottom but, not this little guy. Anyways, he looks good I have not tried to feed him yet and when I do I was going to try frozen blood worms.

I'm going to try to grow him out to 5inches before I transfer him over to the 150 gallon.

tlindsey tlindsey my green terror is as friendly as I have ever seen one, he does not bother the cory's are the dojo's, I feel pretty good he will not bother my little guy when I put him in there but will be ready to move him out if need be.

I will watch the PH, I'm pretty sure my KH will not let it drop and if it does it will be very little. I like the way the almond leaves tint the water and was thinking the bichir would also.

When Senegal are young like you stated they stay near the top probably from instinct to feel safe from predators.
