senegalus Tank Qs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes a lot of peple do keep bichirs and arrows. However if you look you'll notice they are bigger species of bichirs like endy's not smaller species like senegals-Anne

I find most bichir tolerate eachother well you should be able to house any of the below without problems
P. palmas palmas ('palmas' bichir)- 13"
(subspecies)P. palmas polli ('marbled bichir)- 14"
(subspecies) P. palmas buettikoferi ('buettikoferi' bichir)- 13"
P. delhezi ('armoured' or 'delhez's' bichir)- 14"
P. senegalus senegalus ('Senegal' or 'Cuiver's' bichir)- 12"
(possible subspecies)P. senegalus meridionalis- 12"+
There is, Also the possibility of a third member of the Polypterus senegalus
group that is found in the Nile River
P. retropinnis ('retropinnis' bichir)- 14"
P .mokelembembe
Here comes the disclaimer it really depends on the temperment of all involved.-Anne

okay.

well you guys have talked me out of getting an aro.

how about a African pike characin (Hepsetus odoe) from what ive heard they are aggresive enough to go after live food but are peaceful enough to stay away from my senegalus. is this true? do they inhibite the top layers of the aquarium?

i will be upgrading to around a 125-150 gallon (473-567 liters) in the next few months.

my plan is:

3 X Polypterus senegalus senegalus
1 X Polypterus senegalus senegalus (Albino)
2 X Hepsetus odoe
2 X Cichlasoma severum

what do you think?

I got a 4-5" jardini in with my 2.5-3" senegal. He doesn't bother him because he is on the ground and non threatening. Plus i keep him well fed

Don't combine it with Hepsetus! The african pike will grow faster than the senegalus, and might finally eat it.

It is very tough to combine predatory fish, who easily eat prey, that can reach half its mass. No combination with snakeheads, tigerfish, pikes....

Good luck
Thomas

Everything I've heard about Jardini is that they become very aggressive when they reach around the 1 foot mark. Most keep their Jardini by itself because of their aggression. I think your senegal is in danger. Maybe not now but it will be soon. Hope you have a backup plan when the time comes.

Just got back from the LFS....
traded in my BGK and came home with two leopard ctenopoma.
:)

So my tank now has:

3 Senegalus Bichirs (Polypterus senegalus senegalus)
2 Lace Syno (Synodontis nigrita)
1 African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi)
2 Spotted Climbing Perch (Ctenopoma acutirostre)

So what do you guys think?

what else should I add?

I wanted to add a couple more leopard stenopomas, maybe one more ABF and an albino senegulas or palmas bichir?

should I do that or add something else or keep it how it is?

how does your tank look? does it look crowded with all of those fish in there? and what sizes are the fish you have in there now?
