So, i got asked by my biology prof. to set up his old 130 Gallon for a lab.
I wont set it up till Fall this year, but I want to have some ideas.
He is a ichtyologist phd. and has very close ties with the fish and game and considering that this is a classroom scientific setup, I could get basically anything.

The tank was an old SW but it looks pretty complete.
I have around a 500 dollar budget.
thats mostly just for livestock and decor. the tank/supplies look in good condition.

My original thought was a pair of stringrays.
Could they be happy in this tank?
it looks big.
maybe 8 feet?

Im thinking odd, but "user friendly"
I want people to be entertained and WOW when they look at this tank.

Well if you can get ANYTHING, you should get Channa :woot:

But you dont need to get something that normally is illegal. You could get some real oddballs that people will wow at.
Maybe a Clown Knife and some Bichirs. A nice oddball/prehistoric tank.

if its a 130 its probably a 6 ft tank.
I think rays would get too big, but its a good starter tank for them (guessing its 18" wide)
Frontosa colony? bunch of discus? breeding pair of jags?

Maybe it's not narrow.........just not tall???? :woot: SMARTY PANTS:woot: !!!!!.........j/k..... .............maybe a long not so tall tank!!!!!!:naughty:

I had a good convo with my LFs owner about this and she had a good point.
if i get these awesome 'illegal' creatures in this tank, then others would want them.
and the species I was planning were not for beginners.

so I think i may do an african cichlid community.

ive never kept a.c but I do have experience with other african monsters(bichirs, leaffish, abf, synos)
so i have some ideas.

Im hoping to get some nicer looking africans with my budget and have some oddities in there.

possibily synos, african eels, or crustations.
who knows.

but whats a good species to start out with?
haps?

wtf!! dont limit urself to african cichlids. just put a little sticker next to the tank "not for newbs"
http://www.thecichlidgallery.com/article_styrobackground.htm
african cichlids are tight though if they are setup in a cool tank. like this! its jaw dropping
but dont make that ur only option because of what stupid people MIGHT do. plus isnt this tank going to be in a biology class? those students are probably pretty smart and have the capacity to learn
