Do you really think that when the pool is full with water, the walls tighten, that the pacu could actually grab a chuck of the wall and chew through it?:screwy:

You could line the inside of the pool with sections of polycarbonate greenhouse panels (can sometimes be found at Lowes). They could be cut to the height of the pond, screwed together with stainless bolts, or perhaps glued with silicone (if it will stick to poly), the top clipped to the pond and the bottom edge sunk into gravel or sand or rocks. It should protect the liner, it is very tough stuff.

In the end there was simply no way I could properly keep them… so we ate them… they weren’t that good…

You simply need a better recipe because they are really nice tasting fish! Not too many bones and great firm fillets. Just painted with sweet chilli sauce and BBQ-ed is pretty good.

let me ask something.
why do they rip the pools? are they trying to escape? are they bored? if so; can you fix that problem so they would'nt rip the pool? like give him toys, put netting over the pond liner, etc.

The Pacu are very inquisitive fish. Since they dont have fingers, they nibble everything instead and if the nibble produces something unfamiliar they will investigate more. They will easily chew right through powercords, eat floating themometers, crack glass heaters, destroy sponge and box filters, ornaments etc.

It doesnt matter what thickness pond liner you use. Protecting the liner with polycarbonate panels might work if they cant find an edge otherwise they will chew up and probably swallow parts of the polycarbonate sheet.

the joys of keeping pacu :)

nothing like taking a gamble 24/7 of having hundreds, if not thousands of gallons of water all over your basement, with fish flopping around that have the potential to be the size of a small infant :eek:

I think they are worth all the trouble. If you really want a challenge, try breeding them as they have enormous spawns. I had to throw away over a 20L bucket full of good fish eggs. (great for conditioning other fish). Their behaviour reminds me of dogs if you want to hand feed them.

Is there a natural way to spawn Pacu in a small (<2000G) aquaria? I'd imagine that these fish spawn at some speed and or require plnty of room? Not that you'd want 10,000 eggs strewn all over the tank and have a tank crash.

10,000+ eggs would give alot of fish one hell of a gourmet meal. id be freezing them and making little pacu-egg cubes for my rays, rams and parrots.

ill barely be able to house 4 pacu in the house i have now, nevermind several thousand

or try mango salsa with white rice and assparagas/ green beans.
any type of talapia recipe should work too.

can we not turn this thread into eating my babies please.

i cant picture my biggest pacu being eaten (who's named "Taco" at my 6yr olds request BTW)
