Setting up my new 120 Gallon Pic heavy......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If the dimensions are 48x24x24 (or 4'x2'x2') as he listed, then it is a 120. I would love to find one of these tanks.

Yeah, I like the shape of this tank. I'm having trouble with all the holes in the back of the tank but I think I have a plan. I will post up some pics of my plumbing tomorrow. The lower holes will be plumbed to over flows behind the tank drawing water from the bottom. These have to be close to the same hight as the internal over flow so the flow of water is balanced between all three overflows.

This is what I'm doing with two of the lower holes in the back of the tank. This diagram shows the drain from the bottom, my tank will be set up the same but the drain holes (three total 1" drains) are on the lower back of the tank.

Some plumbing updates:

My bucket of plumbing parts all spread out so I can see everything

This is the overflow set up. Water will be flowing into the lower bulkheads up the PVC pipe to the T fitting then back down to the sump. The T fitting is to prevent a syphon.

This is a pic of the 2" drain going along the back of the tank. The three 1" overflows drop into the 2" line. Nothing fancy.

This is the end of the 2" drain going into the sump, you can see the 8" filter sock hanging below the 2" drain line. I think it will be easy to change but noisy. I will extend that line into the filter sock to muffle the noise a bit

On one of the overflows I added a drain with a valve. This will be plumbed to the drain going outside to my yard. I just turn that valve open and the tank will drain almost all the way to the bottom. An easy add but wont be used very often. If you have small kids running around then you need to hang a mouse trap over the valve or your tanks will be empty when you get home from work.

This is the drain from my 450 and my 360. 1.5" line going to the yard.

I spliced in a T fitting and added another line for the 120.

This is the return from the sump back to the tank. Also an overall shot of the mess in the back of the tank. I Frankenstein-ed this plumbing job to try to use up bits and pieces of plumbing I had on hand. I spent about $40 over all in plumbing.

Filled the tank and the stand started leaning. Just didn't feel comfortable with the particle board stand. I'm sure it worked for the guy I bought it from but what the hell, I'm building a new one. I'm going to build it a bit taller. Give me some room to work on the sump if needed and it will be the same hight as the tank next to it.

I'm Frankensteining the stand also. I'm just using scrap wood in my garage. I was going to burn the stuff this winter, turns out I had enough laying around to make everything but the doors.

Pics soon :)

I like the way you plumbed those extra bulkheads with the plumbing going up to the water level line. I've been considering doing an fx5 that way to keep the plumbing out of the tank, but keep from having so much pressure setting on it. That way it still works with a siphon like its suppose to. Good luck getting the stand redone and getting it setup.

For me any extra drain capacity is welcome so when I saw those 5 holes in the back I knew three of them would somehow be drains. I'm still not sure it's going to be enough? They are all only 1" bulkheads. I plan to add a trickle system and I like to add the trickle right to the tank and I put a drain in the sump going to the yard. That way my newly added clean water doesn't go right down the drain. It's far enough away from the sump drain to get fully mixed into the tank water.

Painting the stand now :)

Looks great, I just got a 120 and am planning it out right now. What pump are you using for the return?

Quiet one 6000 I think? maybe 5000?
FYI: Quiet One pumps can be used as submersible or external, I have one as a backup for any situation. If (when) one of my pumps fails I can quickly swap in the Quiet One until I have a replacement or repair.
Now I won’t have a backup for a while L
