I don't use sand even when my reptiles become adults. I only use outdoor carpet. They like it, and its not harmful to them.

Also, sand isn't all bad it just needs to be maintained well and feeding outside of the tank is recommended. Also if you keep up the calcium level the gecko won't feel the need to gulp sand for calcium.

It also depends on the sand, what grain size it is etc, and it also depends on temps. With proper temps a bearded dragon no matter on size should be able to pass sand without issue. Carpet is the worst medium to use for a fossorial reptile hands down. You completely eliminate any natural functions that this animal performs.

I just leave a bowl of calcium out of my guys, and after they eat, they'll just go much some calcium. Kinda off topic, but really cool none-the-less

I had the same problem but not so bad
It's kind of more expensive but buy "calcium sand" or "repti-sand"
It basically melts and turns to calcium in there digestive system!!!
