Severum fry help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No it's just your motherly instincts.
Lol well right now I wish I didn’t have motherly instincts:)
Personally I cried like a baby when I gave away my French Bulldog so Fathers can feel the same.
I am that way with all my pets but my husband isn’t as attracted to the fish as he is to his dogs. Lol now I just have to get ready for Monday’s trip to the LFS, maybe this time I will try and get most of them in this next trip. I think I would be easier on me.

One more question and this is more of an opinion really, I have a breeding pair of green terrors in this same tank but I know they aren’t happy because they are stuck in a corner and don’t swim around anymore since the severum fry have been around. If you were me would you give them up and hope for a better home or should I leave them in the tank? This is my first large tank with large fish and everything changed once the babies arrived.

Personally I probably would rehome them because don't like seeing fish going through that.

Yea that’s what I was thinking. It’s hard to get the right balance with larger fish. Plus when two different types of fish are breeding in the same tank it’s a disaster for the other fish. Plus the Severums took over parenting for about 4 of the green terror fry since the male green terror was eating his babies. What a mess my dream tank has become.

I agree with tlindsey tlindsey I’d give them up. Babies really do completely change the dynamics of a tank.
I know it’s sad giving babies to a store, but some will go to wonderful homes. It will be for the best.

I know I did but it is so hard when you know what it’s like when we all started out and don’t know much and it’s the fish that suffer, those poor babies didn’t know what was happening plus I just think what they are doing tonight without their dad above them. I know it’s not a kid but it kind of feels like it. It’s silly how I feel.
Don't be hard on your self, they got a better chance than wild fish.

As far as catching them ,get a two liter bottle, cut the top off, put a rock in the bottle, put the top in backwards and you have a fish trap!

I’m reviving this as I’m in the Opposite situation...

Hopefully it’s not un classy to piggy back on the same topic... thanks OP!

I bought a pair of red spot severums to teach my bass how to eat pellets... anywho, that was a fail, sev’s picked on bass too much...

now sev pair lives in 75g solo... they have laid. 3 batches of eggs, 2nd batch went really well but they eat the dang wigglers...

something on the net said give em 12 try’s....

I do have a separate fry tank... goal is to get a nice looking classy male as my male is... not so pretty n he’s got an bad eye I did not notice when purchasing....

so, question... can I take the bog log out once they fertilize eggs and point a power head or put air stone under it to simulate the fanning or do I need to strip the eggs off and put in a tumbler?

thanks!

Remove the Driftwood with the eggs on it. I don't like the air to hit the eggs so I keep the object with eggs submerged at al times. A powerhead may be too much but tbh I never tried that method. Place a air stone near the eggs for circulation and to keep waste from collecting on them. If you have Methylen Blue on hand add a couple of drops it helps keep good eggs from fungus.
