i have 3 juv. turquoise severums, varying color patterns, the largest is always black, the middle is goldish green with 2 stripes, and the smallest is silver gold with lots of black stripes..

they get weekly water changes, bi weekly gravel vac, all levels are normal. tank mates a 2 gouramis and a school of danios, white clouds and blood fin tetras. there is no fighting in the tank, everyone gets along great, fins all look gorgeous, the gouramis have their arm things intact..

the tank is 55 gallons, and has 2- 75 gallon filters running on it with an undergravel filter.

my question is this: none of my severums have bright eyes. they arent cloudy or dull, they are bright shiny black eyes. arent they supposed to be varying shades of yellow and orange>?

they are fed a HUGE variety of food, all are healthy eaters, they get earthworms, shrimp, flakes, cichlid pellets, tubifex worm cubes, blood worms, crickets, anacharis plant, boiled lettuce and brine shrimp (live) not all at once obviously, but they get everything at least once a week.

Ummm Post pictures...I'm confused...

i'll try to get some pics of their eyes to show what i mean.. i meant they arent bright orange or yellow... their healthy looking, clear not cloudy( what i meant by bright black) and i was wondering if it was just bad genetics, or if it was something i could fix with adding something to their diet.

mine has (its a juv too) three rings or sections i guess. a ring of solid black, a thin ring of bright yellow and then its solid straight black pupil i guess. i dont think they get too much bright eye coloring and if they do prob not at juv

Here's an eye shot on my 2 if you want to compare. Cool fish and I like em' a lot but as far as 'genetics' I doubt their's is the best because they came from Petsmart. They make up for it in personality though :-) The 3" one is a juvie and has black eyes sorta' like you describe so I bet it's a 'baby thing'.

yea i gues it must be cuz i have one that maybe just over an inch and its eyes have the stripe in it... i think it looks cool

Simply down to genetics.

I have a female gold with incredible bright red eyes, but my male greens are as dull as dish water.

Give them time, im sure youll see some changes as they mature, but it doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with them.
