Just wanted to know the proper growth rate of severums in optimum conditions. And how many of you have grown them to 12" mark or near it? Pictures will be appreciated. And how much time does it take to reach 12" mark or exceed 8"? I have one for some 8 months , got him at over an inch in size and now hes about 5" big....what do u think about this growth rate?

Tried to edit, but ran out of time right before I posted.

Ok, some photos. Unfortunately I've gone and lost the earlier ones of my smaller Male(?) Severum, but that's fine, he's a much more docile fish. My larger female is most definitely the dominant fish of the tank, one of those glass banging Severum you occasionally hear about.

Little bit of background. Was in a well maintained 42Gal 3 foot for a few months, is now in a 140Gal that is understocked, 30% W/C every week or sometimes every 5 or so days. Nitrates never hit over 10, let alone 20ppm.

Fed twice a day, with a mix of Hikari Cichlid Gold, Hikari Staple, Orca High Protein pellets, but not these so much anymore. Vegetable meal for lunch, usually skinned Peas but often mixed up with diced Cucumber and Zuccini. Occasionally crush up an Hikari Algae Wafer in the Mortar and Pestle and feed that too.

First day of purchase, November 26, 2007. I can't say exactly what size she was then, I'd estimate 2".

Forgive the crappy photos, tanks a bit dirt as I did a water change earlier, today, Friday 29th February.

Current size would be around 4.5-5" I'd say. Very bulky but not fat, too.

As for my smaller Male(?).

Bit banged up from the larger Severum, but he gets his fair share of food. Today, February 29, 2008. He would have been perhaps 2.2" when introduced in early January, and would now be closer to 3.5".

All of these measurements are guesstimates. Hope you get the general picture.

Can I just say again that I love your female sev and blue acara in particular? Acara in particular is stunning...

Anyway back on topic, I have grown severums to nearly 10" (golds, only golds). 4" growth in 8 months sounds OK, for me they slow down a bit once they hit 7-8".

Afternoon All

Had my breeding pair for about 3 years now, kept them in a 40 gal tank for a year until they sized up

One male green (apparently wild...hes got the temper for it) and one tame gold female (whos been through the wars)

Heres my male

And heres a rubbish photo of my female.

They now both live in a 100 Gal.

Took them about a year and a half to hit 8 inch, but the male is knocking on 10" now.

I would say my sev grew quite slow (compared to other CA/SA cichlids) and definately slowed down around the 6-7" mark.

Wow! nice growth Japes, you've got cool lookin cichlids. Nice to see some big chaps with u Craig, thats a good size for a 40g tank, dont they look crowded in there? Actually my severum would have done much better, but it was always bullied by its tankmates, then I removed all of them and added few barbs....it started doin well, then suddenly the barbs went mad and attacked it nipped almost whole dorsal...I threw them out after that. And hes getting better. Hes presently in a 30gallon tank with 3 male firemouths....will soon shift them all to a bigger tank when he hits 8" mark.

At what point do they start getting that marbling in the face?
Mine when it started closing to 4" mark, still they are pale, it takes time I guess for them to darken up.

Yeah, i had to "invest" in the 4x2x2... bit of a waste for two sevs and a big pleco, but the male has such a temper its hard to find some decent tank mates.

Gotta admit, their alot happier (even if they have stopped breeding)
