Found a pic on-line.....to sex....you are looking for claspers for male (on the right in the pic)....and no claspers for female.....when the ray is young, they just look like little pointy nubs.....this pic should illustrate...

but by how red that ray is....it may not matter....that is SO red...make sure you keep the water quality pristine.....and don't stress it out...you may lose the ray from the ammonia burn, or whatever is making it that red....

Water is nearly perfect when I tested this morning.

How long should I expect it to take for the redness to go away if it is in fact ammonia burns? Also, it wasn't shipped, it was just picked up from my LFS, but there was a 2hr drive involved.

When you say near perfect...are you showing any ammonia or nitrite or just nitrate?

Just check and see if there are claspers under it. Look up online, you can see what claspers are if you dont already know. everyone seems to have it right from the picture, looks like a female. but like they have said, hard to see. need a close up pic of were the tail meets the body. if you look online, you might find clapser pictures on sharks, but its the same look. there will be one on each side of the tail. if it is young, and if its a male, could be small, but really looks more to be a female.
As for the redness.. people are saying it due to they are concerned. Could be Ammonia burn yes, could be stress, could be just the glass in the picture making it look redder than it really is. but that seems really red. Check your water daily for the next week or so. Make sure the ammonia is none..... "0" .. . keep her in the sand, let her do her own thing for awhile and leave her alone except to feed. at least for a week or two. she needs to relax. get use to her area, eat... etc.
put some aquarium salt in the tank. half what you would for the gallon of your tank. do not add more for at least a week and a half. Let your tank cycle it thru the water. the salt will help her heal. but do not use anything else.. rays can be sensitive to meds.
have fun and good luck

Maybe the LFS just got it in, and it has bin traveling for a long time all together. Did you see her eat before you bought?

I bought it during feeding time, actually, the guy was feeding them as I walked by which sort of brought my attention to them and interested me.

The ray is eating fine (I gave her some ghost shrimp to eat).

And I'm just showing trace amounts of nitrate. The burn is nearly gone, and it was a bit red at the fish store, but no where near as red as in that picture. I can see small bits of pink towards the center, but not far around. Unfortunately, my blackberry decided to stop reading the memory card today so I can't get any pictures. Does anyone have a picture of what is an acceptable amount of pink for a motoro? Also, considering I quarantine feeders, is it okay if my ray's diet is Ghost Shrimp all the time, with the odd bit of frozen bloodworms it ends up eating from my aro?

I've tried feeding bloodworms, and she eats a tiny bit, but not much. I've tried frozen shrimp and they just sat in the tank for a bit and I decided to scoop them out to keep ammonia at 0.

I think the filtration should help a lot, the tank has a rather high turn over rate, a 2217 on a 65g (I know its too small for a fully grown ray, its a grow out tank).

It will take a lot of Ghost Shrimp to keep a ray well fed. You can try earthworms or nightcrawlers, she may want them chopped up if they're large, and assuming she takes those mix them with shrimp to wean her off of them.

I fed 10 ghost shrimp and they were gone in a day. I'm planning on placing an order for 200 or so (the guy at my LFS said he can have them within a week of me making a deposit), and breeding them myself.

I can dedicate a 30g to them.

I just won't want to chop up night crawlers or earth worms, sounds quite messy.

There isn't really suppose to be any pink on the bellyof rays in general! On e occasion they may have some redness by their mouth from scrapping them during eating where there is a substrate base, but other then that no pink bellies!
