sex the rd

I had a 1 year old male who looked almost identical to your fish. Don't jump to conclusions based on appearance alone. I'm not giving my (educated!) opinion until I can see a better vent pic ;)

i say male...males are more red than anything...females have more white...it depends on the diet with the bump!

I think you have your statements mixed up. The gender of the fish has nothing to do with the amount of red or white on the fish. But, generally males will have larger nuchal humps than the females. The biggest factor with the color would be a very good and varied diet. The nuchal hump's greatest factors would be the fish's genes, water quality and dominance, over the diet. :)

judging by the finage i would say male.

Do you mean because they're longer and pointy?

Hmm...so is this a male?

FlowerHorns are different because they are bred for their color, hump, finnage so male and female usually look very similar.....The following FH was just low quality is why it lacks the knochal but displays nice finnage. When it comes to large Central American pure species cichlids in most cases males display longer finnage and larger humps...

Well, I don't see how they're different...but are you saying its a male or a female then?

FlowerHorns are hybrids that are made up of several species of cichlids to display all the popular traits of cichlids.....In other words they are bred to have all these traits which then in return makes it extremly difficult to tell male from female without venting. RD's on the other hand are Pure even if they are a mix between RD and Midas they are mostly pure blood. In pure species of RD or Midas long finnage and Large hump most always means male. In the case of the FH above it is low quality but still since they are bred to have large humps and finnage its very difficult to tell male from female. So in the fish above guessing male or female would be quite difficult. But in higher quality FH's males and females even at that size will display very long finnage and large humps.

Here is an example......This is my higher quality FH when it was only 3.5" if this fish was a RD it would without a doubt be a male due to the hump at this size and the long finnage but its a FlowerHorn and ended up being a female....Crazy huh!

Lol oh that's such bull.

I've had plenty of pure, CA females develop amazing finnage. The trick is to allow them to be in a position where they're not constantly being picked at and having their fins nipped. My point here is finnage is typically a BS, unreliable way of sexing most fish on appearance. I'm still maintaining that the RD in question is this thread could be a male, or a female, and until I see a proper vent shot, I'm not saying which. I've seen plenty of female RD's look the same way and plenty have had just about exactly the same body shape (including the nuchal hump) as the pic of the FH you posted.

And one more thing...please refrain from calling my little Bongo girl there, low-quality again. She's a long way from actually, but that's not the point. Fish snobs drive me nuts. Thanks :)

No problem, didn't mean to upset you. Just calling it how i see it, very low quality IMO...Seems to be alot of people here with attitudes. To each his own I guess. Also please post a pic of a female RD at only 3.5" with that type of hump and finnage, now that statement you made is the BS...
