And you are correct, it is the male to my 4.5" breeding pair. There is even a very clear shot of a fry in the picture in the upper right corner if I remember correctly. Ill post a pic of the female along with this post. Its all in the spangling.

Heres a link to the threads with pictures of the pair: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=291272

LOL. thats too funny:) I just went thru the same thing with my male... it colored up just like yours and started questioning its sex. I like when they look like that thou.

female.. black dorsal, andnot much blue bangles on the body and not all over the fins.

The first pic is a male. Look at all the spangles on the body and dorsal fin. Def male. They get the black dorsal and stripes when breeding and black substrate enhances their darker colors.

I saw your post yesterday and refrained from guessing as I to have pics of my male lookin' real female while breeding and when the wigglers start swimming. The blue spangling can be a good give away but so is the deep orange of the females which your 1st pic showed none.......................nice psych out.

Hahaha you knew all along... I had festae for quite a while, they don't usually fool me. I go off the blueish spackles on the side of a male that usually gives it away. Female also seem to have more of a blueish tint to the black dorsal fin. Color varies you can't really go by orange or red for female, they are pretty moody fish, but I love seeing the female with deep red color. I sold mine, but I had quite the female! Someone on mfk has her.
