There is a 50% chance that it is male.

she is a large lone female in the 180. shows my assumption of the belly spotting means nothing once past 2 years old. since fish right next to me should have known better. moving her to her own 75 today, along with a small 8" pleco and a 7" sun cat. looking to lighten the load on the 180.

Great diagram.

Yes...20 plus years ago, when before I had a PC or laptop... before I ever went on any forums ...and way before I logged on the internet with a smartphone, I purchased every cichlid book I could find......Dr Paul V.Loiselles...'The Cichlid Aquarium'....very good book.....

Yeah I thought she was a big girl....., she's got the male traits with pattern.... But her overall look reminded me of JC1119 big female that I posted..... There's just so many looks to Jaguar cichlids though...,. Doing an image search on the internet you get thousands of results.... Some traits are consistent for the sexes and then you see some that fall outside the norm...., my own personal breakthrough to tell them apart which is not really a revelation is just take a good look at that vent... A lot of times people are posting fish to be sexed without a good clear full body shot... I've been taking a lot of pics of my fish and I've been noticing on the jags that I am growing out that you can see the appearance of the genital papillae starting at about 4 months old.... Zoom in on those pics of my adult male and you could see it.... looks like a rose bush thorn.... The first pic is of the fish I posted at the beginning of this thread taken March 25th.. 4 months 2 days after it hatched if you zoom in you can see the male papillae beginning to develop... ...
