very easy to sex. flip them over and at the base of the body (just at the start of the tail) males have 2 fairly thick appendages(they look like two short legs almost.. Females do not have these.
females will also have longer swimmerets to hold all of her babies. I also found that my male cray has long, skinny claws, while the femle has short fat ones. The claw thing is not always true though.
All I mean is with cichlids in the tank any baby crays would likely get eaten before getting big enough to defend themselves right? they do have a tremendous amount of hiding places in my tank that they could take refuge in but I imagine that the young ones arent smart enough to hide and only come out at night.
The crays will breed with cichlids in the tank, but the babies will probably get eaten as you said. Your supposed to separate the babies from the mother after they come off of her tail because they are cannibalistic.
Depends on what species they are. Southern hemisphere crayfish have different sexual organs and methods of sexing the crayfish compared to Northern hemisphere.
I have better shots of the cherax species, which is the ones I think you are looking for. But basically, from the tail, a little round "hole" at the base of the third pair of walking legs is a female and if they are on the first set then it is male. Post a pick of the underside of your cray and I will sex it for you.
