Sexing Jags and adivce

Good example of how using just one marker - here it happens to be markings below the lateral line - isn't good to do. Notice the body shape and whiter fins... also the mouth to eye relationship.
I'm in the amateur ranks with ya and don't think any of us are experts at sexing these fish and that's why venting is the best option. There's always the fish out there that don't play by the rules...
Very true. Where's aquamojo when we need him lol. He probably has more experience with jags than anyone on earth
If you go to the "CA/SA profile" sticky in CA/SA Cichlid forum and look for the profile on Parachromis fredrichstahli (sp?) or "freddies" there are some great pics of the vents, and I think the vent shapes will be the same for Jags.
His "Today in the Fishroom" in the July 2010 TFH is the reason I have a 300 gallon tank. lol and it's still not big enough. He has some amazing fish, but his parachromis are really something else

the females will have spotting on the chin but it will not be black spots like males will have. they will be dark brown but not black. the fish on top was a female and the bottom was a male even though body shape was very maleish. look at the spots on the chin
