Shamu at Sea world Kills his trainer...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
fyi. This kinda thing happens all the time.

I wouldn't really consider any of those videos an attack. Those whales could have EASILY killed any of those people. Instead they were just playing a bit. Unfortunately their play is a bit much for our frail bodies.

This whole incident was terrible but really not too surprising. These are powerful, and intelligent hunters, I imagine a whale would get frustrated being kept in a small pool and doing tricks all the time.

Well then, if you don't, don't consider the incident that just happened to the female trainer an attack either. What happened in most of those videos is exactly what happened to her. Only she wasnt lucky enough to escape before drowning. Whale grabs a limb, doesn't let go, the person drowns. As for distinguishing if any of those videos or the recent incident was an attack or just playing, no one will really know for sure. Being that you cant read whales minds. Also, just because someone doesnt die, doesn't mean you can say it wasn't an attack, and visa versa.

i agree ...anyone of these videos could have ended in a tragedy... they were all just lucky.

You misunderstood what I was saying. Those events the whale seemed very relaxed. The eye witness account of the whale shaking the trainer just sounded more violent. I don't know I wasn't there. I wasn't implying that since no one died it wasn't an attack.

i understand how you can interpret that feeling of relaxation..it was all a relaxed video until they did the opposite of what anyone expected them to do.. and even then it ended safe... it is just the thought of what could have changed the whole scenario in seconds... the thought that in any of these videos one wrong move:WHOA:could have been deadly

yeah, they do seem relaxed in those vids. Orcas don't thrash around like sharks though. I dont expect this incident involved too much vicious shaking as most expect. The vid I didn't post, where the whale bites the guy in half and kills the guy, looked very similar to the rest. I would expect the eyewitness accounts have a little bit of a "lost in translation", in terms of their adjectives. Also, you have to keep in mind that eyewitness accounts are usually rubbish. By the time those people wrote their statements, they had more than enough time for their imaginations and conversations with others to skew their memories. I've read a few of the testimonies and it seems to be a hodgepodge of different stories. But that's the way it goes. The best testimony is a video.

Here's a quick vid of an orca eating to give you an idea of their speed. Now keep in mind these are wild, hunt for their food, travel miles upon miles in a single day, and athletic/agile. They're not playing in this vid, they're out for blood. But you can see they're not very fast animals. They dont thrash or move too quickly, like you would expect from sharks or dolphins.

Another thought: incorporate an old, fat whale that doesn't get the proper exercise and that's had his food hand fed to him for 30 years. That might hinder the shaking aspect even more, though I'm no expert.

I was thinkin' the whole "no one died so it wasnt an attack" statement was just worded wrong or whatever. didnt make too much sense.

i figured footage of whales at seaworld actively hunting and killing prey would be worth posting

edit/ Actually... this vid helps to back up my whole, "whales are slow" theory.

I HATE pelicans. We lose a couple every year to marine mammals. I'm waiting for one to get nabbed in our shark exhibit. :D

Love that vid Cam....

2:20 is CLASSIC!!!!

Thou Ive always wondered why the whales dont tip the boat over and eat everybody....lol
