Shamu at Sea world Kills his trainer...

im not saying i think its right the way they keep these animals, on the contrary i hate the fact that these animals have to live out their lives in the whale equivalent of prison, i was just saying that in that particular instance the whale seemed to be somewhat "happy"Ang;3923020; said:

I don't believe the orca has control over the fin, its made of cartilage. Also its not universal. Some whale have straight dorsal fine in captivity and some have curled dorsals in the wild(i heard certain populations have a much higher frequency of it). Males are more likely to have it since there fins grow much bigger then females.
Most people believe the cause is gravity and genetics, whales in captivity spend much more time at the surface where water doesn't support its fin.
it is sad, but maybe...just maybe...we should find other ways to entertain ourselves besides enslaving several ton predatory marine mammals and teaching them parlor tricks. I know its a radical idea, especially on MFK, but an orca belongs in the ocean.
when I went to thailand last summer we visited a tiger camp, and I couldn't help hoping that one of those adult males would maul one of the tourists who paid to cuddle with the tigers. I actually watched a women get her hand chomped by a juvenile tiger at a private zoo in Alabama. The tour guide was explaining to a group of 5th graders that she was just a big kitty cat. I thought to myself, "now that's just not true. She should leave that cat alone." She reached her hand in the tiny cage the tiger was sleeping in and started petting her head, and the tiger bit a hole through the palm of her hand about as big around as a quarter. Then it dug it's claws into the woman's forearms and started trying to pull her into the cage. They sprayed the cat with a hose and like 3 or 4 big guys pulled her off the claws. She got what she deserved if you ask me. It's a respect thing. It's a shame we reduce these incredible animals to this.
I bet if you're an orca you have to do some really flashy tricks to get a trainer for a treat....

Personally I think the Orca should be put down.
If they are as smart as people say they are and have spent lots of time with the trainers, the Orca should of knew how to handle the trainer. With that, he should be treated like any other Human Attacking Animal.
I also dont think anything that big and shows signs of stress (fin curled) should be housed in a big pond. I think places like this set them self up for Failure (Death or things that go wrong)

The Today show just aired a story on this. Did not do much more to clear up exactly what happened. A representative from Sea World said that the animal would be cared for and handling procedures where being reviewed. They already had more stringent procedures for this whale, they did not get in the water with it. If this is the same bull I saw several years ago it was not one of the performers they just displayed it in the main tank at the start of the show and did not get in the water with it.
