Varied diet, clean water, plants, good lighting for that type fish (on timed dimmers), big enough tank, and last but not least, luck.

I agree with all the above. Luck especially.. and having good suppliers cant hurt. Bad Fish stores will hurt you more than anything else when you get started.

All of the above. Nothing fancy here, just stick to the basics.

Water changes, Water changes, Water changes.

For growing out small fish, Cyclop-Eeze is amazing stuff.. You should all try it ;) It can double a neon tetras size in 2-3 weeks.

oh yeah.. Heres one. When catching XL Plecos it is easier to catch them with your hands.. If you flip them upside down in the tank, most plecos will go limp. If anyone has caught sharks, and turned them belly-up, they usually pass out. Plecos will do the same thing, even though I have had a few fighters. This makes the headache of having to net that 20"+ common Pleco no longer a problem.. I even catch my smaller Plecos this way, as I hate to see fish get tangled in the nets. It is also less slime coat being ripped away.

Be careful not to get stabbed by the dorsal, you may have to wear gloves. I find a little pressure on the 'cheeks' and 'tail' of a pleco, rather then trying to lynch down from above, is the best way to get it.. Good Luck!

Big tank size from the start, but i am being hypocritical.

Good diet, often and regular water changes, cycled tank, pristine water conditions, consistent lighting times, good lighting, compatible tank mates and finally dedication, it's not your whole life, but it makes your life whole.

If your Pictus cat gets tangled up in net just cut away the net around the barbs on the fins and the net will come free in a few hours.
