Natural live foods -- ghost shrimp, feeder minnows and gold fish, feeder cray fish, worms, etc. no processed junk foods

At least 50% water change per week.

Good assortment of medications prepared before obtaining new fish.

Good hospital tank set up ready to go when needed.

the main key to success for me has been the use of a quarantine tank. Too many lfs fish loaded with nematodes and other parasites that need more than salt+heat which is why I treat all new fish from questionable sources with meds for internal parasites.

water changes

lol not that it isn't a good thread but it made me chuckle that a 4 year old thread was brought back with this stunning "secret"

the secret to growing monster plecos is : ZUCCHINI!!!!!! you wanna be careful cuz it can mess up the parameters if you let it sit too long and pieces break off, but I learned this from an LFS that had a 2 foot common that they claimed had grown 18 inches in a year and a half. thats pretty good growth even for a common!

Varied diet, good filtration, regular WCs, proper lighting, understanding the species I keep. To many people and places tend to lump fish into catergories. I treat my fish on a fish by fish basis. And imo you can never overfeed juvinile fish. frequent feedings do more for my fish then one or two large meals. If I can get away with live plants in a tank I load it up! and you can never have to many hideing spots. a fish with an opportunity to hide, but doesn't is a happy fish. and driftwood.. lots and lots of driftwood. or other decor to simulate natural habitats. Lava rock will strip a slime coat, and is a pita to clean. I've found the stuff useless.

But the top of the list is Patience,Balance, and careing. Patience because a tank doesn't cycle over night, 'nore can properly treating a sick fish, 'nore quarantinieng. Balance, in my tank lay-outs, and feeding practices. Careing, If you care about your fish you notice each individual, and can see slight abnormaties in them before something minor gets major more often then not. Even my feeder takes get "cared" for. If my feeders are sick, then my large stock gets sick. It's a circle.

I don't think it is so much "secrets" but these are the things I have learned.

The fish keeping secret I would like to share is Convenience. If you do water changes with a technique that is fast and easy and buy food when it is needed then this hobby will grow fast and stay healthy.
