With all these new strains and color variants of the umbee there are in the hobby today thanks to UMBEEKING, I have decided to 'mix' and make my own! Of course I still respect all the pure strains there are in the hobby today and that we should continue to keep them pure, but I was just curious to see what these fish would look like. I call these fish project M (for monster!) or Frankenumbees! I haven't come up with a clever name yet but that will probably do. These are purely for true hobbyists! I am curious to see what they will turn into as adults. I won't give out the exact recipe but let's just say they have RED AND BLUE freckles already.:naughty::drool::D Enjoy :)DSC_0577.JPGDSC_0139.JPG

I knew someone had to be doing this. ;-)

Looks like they like to eat!

Oh SHshhhh!!! The Umbee game is getting more insane!!!! pushing the envelope for the hobbyist and giving them something new to enjoy! Congrats!!! This is something that has also crossed my mine from time to time. You created the first Man Made UMBEE lol!!!! I very curious to see what these will develop into. Still 100% Umbriferum, Interesting!!! Congrats! Heads up though, The haters will be coming but really what can they say. All the original strains are still kept and maintain by me. CONGRATS!!!!!!!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

What happens if the new umbies turn out to be a separate species? (highly likely given how the splitting seems to be in vogue among scientists atm)

The new Umbees where DNA tested prior to me releasing them. There Umbriferum. However lets say if scientists due classify them as a separate species that would definitely change a lot of things and truly a monster WB has created :)

Currently. But that could change when someone takes a closer look at the species. This has been done a lot with SA species thus far.

If you would have told me 30 years ago there would be 5 convict species, I would have called you crazy.

Very true! We will just have to wait and see and truly a FrankenUmbee had been created by WB..

If he's just curious, that's one thing (still very wrong, but newer aquarists don't see it that way). I just wouldn't distribute them at all just in case.

I'm not saying that because I dislike the new umbies. I actually am quite fond of them (except for the trade name you gave them UK ;) ). I'm just against any crossing of this sort. Probably because I come from more of a dwarf cichlid background, Westie and Apisto keepers have always traditionally kept the different races separate ... crossing the races is almost as bad as making a hybrid.

Well thank you for letting me know how you feel about the name Gorillus and just so you know, your one off the few that dont like the name GORILLUS ;) lol!!!

Now to say what WB did is wrong is your opinion. There is no written rules in this hobby. ITS A HOBBY! PEOPLE KEEP ALL TYPES OF THINGS!!!! LOL!!! Theres also all types of HOBBYIST too! Some are purest like your self and some keep all types of weird shsh!!!! Perfect example, you love dwarf cichilds right? Well guess what? I dont :) I love my large aggressive Tank Buster Cichlids!! Always have and always will :) If you wish to keep pure strain fish then by all means due. If you'r a hobbyist that is into hybrids and crossing strains then by all means keep what keeps you happy. Hell! some of us keep fish that are illegal lol!! If the projects we conduct in our own home aquariums made a impact on the wild populations of Fish we keep then yes, It would be extremely wrong... As I do believe in keeping and protecting our natural populations. There is nothing loss here in WB's creation but possibly something new for hobbyist to enjoy. He is clearly selling the fish as something he created not a new strain or color variant collected, imported etc.
