Here we go lol. Okay so have to chime in with 2 cents. These guys are doing something new with this hobby, they are not hybrid breeding, they are simply taking two separate strains of pure Umbee and crossing them for better looking offspring. This is no different then line breeding two separate strains of Umbee or any other pure blood fish. Example-Red Tiger Mota you have two red variants of the species hailing from two separate rivers and or locations points Rio Copan and Rio Blanco. Both are red variants of the RTM, if I breed them (and I have) the reason is to try for a more intense mix yet still maintaining the pure blood line without hybridizing the fish out. No different then what they are doing here. Personally I believe to frown upon such a thing is showing ignorance and a will to avoid change and progress. Many people have hated on Chris and his guys but especially Chris for the introduction of the Gorillas Blue and Black variant of the Umbee. Fact. However their resentment and jalousie for not BEING THE ONE compiled with ridiculous ignorance shows through for many to see. The introduction of these two color variants of arguably the largest New World cichlid in the World. Has not only breathed new life and excitement for this species (very much need prior to Chris Umbee bloodline were crap for almost a decade) into the hobby but it has also shown how a select few try to discredit and control the markets in many ways.
You got Rapps selling his fish F2 because he's too proud to ask for F1 from the source and calling them a different name, got Mr. Clean (everyone know who this is) who apparently has his hand in with TFD Magazine who recently dropped a submitted article on the subject (stating it's not the direction they are looking to go) because they have not been on each other's like list for a long time now. This I found so funny it hurt yet sad. Not a direction the leading fish mag wants to go hum. Lets see two new color variants of one of the prettiest and largest cichids in the world lol yeah would say that makes for a decent story...
Never the less every person can have their own opinion. 15 Years ago if you had a tattoo society branded you and restricted you, now they are almost excepted every where. No different here except here you have people burnt because they envy and wanted the glory. Well people cannot always have what they want.
Chris, Worldbelow and their guys are turning out some of the most stunning Umbee ever offered in the hobby and will be for a long time coming, so I guess the old school guys- although I am sure it's a hard pill to swallow for now, will just have to eat it regardless cause I know Chris and they have no plans to slow their progress...
Oh and about the Hybrid question posed, lol I dare someone to put their best looking fish up who has issues with this subject. I keep both pure and hybrid cichlids have for decades now. I would love the opportunity to smash your pipe dream and show you what a real Ornamental Show fish looks like! Remember both have their place in this hobby and Chris said it best their are no rules in this game IT'S A HOBBY son THE BASTARD IS OUT................:) Umbee power you guys are doing good stuff her man never let anyone tell you different!

Well thank you for letting me know how you feel about the name Gorillus and just so you know, your one off the few that dont like the name GORILLUS ;) lol!!!

Now to say what WB did is wrong is your opinion. There is no written rules in this hobby. ITS A HOBBY! PEOPLE KEEP ALL TYPES OF THINGS!!!! LOL!!! Theres also all types of HOBBYIST too! Some are purest like your self and some keep all types of weird shsh!!!! Perfect example, you love dwarf cichilds right? Well guess what? I dont :) I love my large aggressive Tank Buster Cichlids!! Always have and always will :) If you wish to keep pure strain fish then by all means due. If you'r a hobbyist that is into hybrids and crossing strains then by all means keep what keeps you happy. Hell! some of us keep fish that are illegal lol!! If the projects we conduct in our own home aquariums made a impact on the wild populations of Fish we keep then yes, It would be extremely wrong... As I do believe in keeping and protecting our natural populations. There is nothing loss here in WB's creation but possibly something new for hobbyist to enjoy. He is clearly selling the fish as something he created not a new strain or color variant collected, imported etc.

Well, I think they are way too impressive and beautiful to be named after a dirty, disgusting knuckle dragging ape ... but that could be the movies I got done watching talking.

Well, actually there was a rule against it back in the day. A few older publications actually denounced it, and as I grew up in the hobby during that period, my views slant that way of course. Just like my da's favorite swear word is 'communist' even today ... When I worked in at a lfs in the 90's, we and several others in the area refused to carry the blood parrots. And any mix brought in was immediately fed to the big tank (usually convictxsemptem mixes being the most common at the time).

I keep mostly dwarves now a days due to tank size. A succession of apartments or sharing a house with roomies have meant I've had to keep my tanks small. If I ever do end up back with bigger thanks, there are several bigger pikes and CA's I'd love to have, including your two new umbies.

My question to you Darth pike is, Do you frown on those hobbyist out there that keep hybrid Cichlids like Flowerhorn etc? If so why?

Let's just say I couldn't post my feelings on this matter without being banned.

I hear ya but to look down at another hobbyist because they like something different then the norm in my opinion is straight out wrong. I don't keep hybrids I keep pure blood Cichlids. Thats my thing and quite frankly it would be boring if we all kept the same thing and felt the same. Yes, I believe in keeping the strains separate and is something I practice but Ill tell you this, If these New FrankenUmbees created by WB turn out to be the most beautiful and unique Umbee ever to grace the earth, then guess what? Ill have to keep some too :) Every time Im on this forum I see cichlids that people say are beautiful but I disagree with. I would never chime in and say I think there fish is ugly, Why because what I think about someone else's fish dosen't matter. What matters is that the fish is bringing that individual enjoyment. Thats what should matter in this hobby, what you enjoy keeping..

I'll reply in pm if you want UK ... wouldn't want to derail the thread anymore than it already has nor bring the haters out on either side and get the thread closed like so many do when they delve into this.
