I got into a friendly debate with my coworker about Shark attacks.

He sides with most everyone else who thinks all shark attacks are "wrong place wrong time" or accidents, unintentional, curiousity and so on.

I on the other hand feel just like there are A-hole people in the world that like to blow frogs up with firecrackers and kick puppies - there are A-hole sharks that just like to screw with humans out at sea because they're bigger and they can and they don't care what species(human) you are.

what do YOU think and why.

I think its a combination of both. We do invade their natural habitat, and its impressive how few attacks there are, but studies have shown certain animals attack people, often do it again

I think it's accident and wrong place and time. Sharks are usually the apex predators of their environments so anything in the water is fair game. People don't want to get attacked stay out of the water where sharks are know to be or watch your back.

I can see your point brich.

I agree to a point.
But here is my thing, how is it accidental when everything in the water is fair game like you said...that means it can and will attack whatever it wants by CHOICE.

i think if you cage off a shark and get him to a real feeling of "hungry" and then send a diver in...that diver is going to get bitten at the very least.

I've heard all too many times "human flesh doesnt tastes good to sharks" but i think "how do they know?!" Some people like the taste of mushrooms and some hate it. some sharks might like human flesh and some might hate it.

some of my Piranhas like shrimp and some refuse to eat it.

ill admit some are probably mis identification thinking divers are seals but i think some are just A-hole sharks trolling.

Well remember this, predators go after things they can take, things that look like easy prey. With the way humans move in and underwater I'm sure we look very easy to take.

But the shocking thing to me atleast is nearly everytime you get in the ocean, sharks arent far. I was shocked to find I can catch literally hundreds of black tip reef sharks within feet of where thousands of people swim and no attacks. I think if people were more aware of the shark population, they may see these "killers" in another light

I would side with your friend 70/30. If there are Ahole sharks attacking people there would a lot more deaths. Shark experts also say that in places like Hawaii humans on surfboards look like turtles. The turtle is the tiger sharks favorite food

On the one hand, Jaws kept going after boats for no apparent reason, so that was just a dick move. On the other, he's made of rubber.

^ hahah i promise i dont buy into the shark attack movies and think they're all out to kill us and our $70,000 boats (however i am terrified to go back in the water ;)

But yea, i can see both sides points pretty easily.

I'm not saying they "Fish" for humans (so to speak) or hunt them down specifically. I just have a hard time believing theyre all accidents. i would say 50/50 accidental/intentional.

i just can't handle these "experts" coming on tv saying bold statements and claims that " they're all mis identification" or " sharks don't like human flesh"

like its not possible a single bit that the surfer got munched simply because he came in close contact with an animal that could kill him- not because the shark thought he was a seal or turtle.

Considering most people aren't eaten by sharks, I would think its mostly sharks mistaking us for their natural prey. The problem is with large sharks, the first bite is usually devastating. I guess the acception would be, once they start to frenzy. Such as when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in WW2. If sharks were purposely targeting us, there would be a lot more attacks. We are pretty easy prey in the water
