I target sharks here in So Cal but they are mostly leopard sharks which come all the way into knee deep water so I don't have to cast so far on the east coast though you can catch lemon, hammerhead and bull sharks from shore with the right gear. Bigger sharks don't go into the surf zone too much so you want to get your bait outside of the breakers. You want to have at least 300 yards of line 60# braid or stronger with a wire leader. Use Macks cut in half or other greasy fish with lots of oils in them to attract sharks. You can use a 3 way swivel with a 2 oz. or bigger pyramid sinkers depending on the current with a 10 foot or bigger surf fishing pole. Wing it as far as you can and if you can't get outside of the breakers you can always put the rod into a sand spike put it in free spool and swim it out there. Drop it swim back and wait. I always use circle hooks since you hook them mostly in the lips which makes for easy removel once you land your shark. Also it's always good to have a fishing partner since it's really hard to tail a shark with your rod still in hand.

You can easily catch sharks from shore on the east coastof florida. Bull sharks often come into almost knee deep water after dark. West coast doesn't drop off as much, so a lot of people use kayaks to get their bait way out. You should be able to catch some nice black tips. My gf caught a small one the other night on 20lb test no leader lol.

Thanks, this is my first time actually targeting sharks. I'm curious on which beaches by Port Saint Lucie people have caught sharks. I'm developing a cart on bass pro's to purchase equipment. Also I will be most likely use a bait casting reel, any advice on how to cast it?

shark fishing on the northeast.
fresh blue fish or bunker will work great an a bucket of chum Or if you Can Find Whale Meat. and head out to the hudson cayons. or go out Montuak Point.
go charter the (Cricket II) Frank Mundus

I've heard good things about port St. Lucie for shark. It's easier to find beaches where there aren't as many people. I think there is a park or preserve near the water where you could fish without worrying about chumming sharks up close to anyone. Pierandsurf.com has a lot of people that are familiar with the area.

heres a vid of where you are going

Your going to need a heavy duty 10 foot surf rod and good quality reel, i say 300 yards or 30# with maybe a 4 foot wire leader with a 4/0 circle hook.

Thanks guys, btw isn't a 4/0 circle hook too small? I'm about to purchase 10/0 circle hooks?

How big are you planning the sharks to be? I dont think you would need anything above 8/0 for surf fishing.

I suggest using something like a penn 4/0 style reel.
Large surf rod.
50lb or higher braided line.
5ft or longer steel leader (multistrand is what i suggest like american wire)
6/0 or bigger circle hooks.
Chunks of Jack Crevalle, Mullet, Lady Fish, Mackerels, just about anything you can cut into chunks and will bleed. Fresh caught bait is the best.

and for all you haters out there who will disagree with me heres a little proof the above works
