It may cost more, but I am a big fan of the bead filters. I have 3 and couldn't be happier. No channeling, easy backwash and rinse. Just another option.

I agree but what can I say, I am cheap:D

lol - my sand filter came free with the pool, and they were having a sale on 2HP pool pumps for $200 shipped.

Are those of you that use above ground pools also using the typical pool surface skimmer? Have you run into any problems (ie. Sharks swimming into it)?

is it possible to use a sand filter without the surface skimmer?

algae scrubber would cost a fortune to run on that size tank. Like everyone said a pool filter and a good skimmer. A large pond UV could take of the green water but you will still have spots.

Yes absolutely. Surface skimming is only a means of drawing water out of the tank.

I have been keeping sharks for 20 plus years. I have always had good luck with a wet-dry filter and a quality protien skimmer. Sharks require high oxygen levels. A wet-dry produces much higher oxygen levels than cannisters and fluidized sand filters. A good skimmer will also reduce the load on the filter and help out with the oxygen levels. I would always suggest oversize filtration with sharks. If money is an issue, you can easily build them. I have one built out of a large rubbermaid tote filled with bio-balls (you can use plastic pot scrubbers if on a budget) sitting inside of a rubbermaid trough. The troughs come in 75, 100, and 150 gallon sizes and can be purchased at a feed store or tractor supply. You can easily drill your hole for a bulkhead to connect a pump. You can use polyester batting material (buy at a fabric store) on top of your drip plate or under your spraybar for mechanicle filtration. It works the same as bonded blue. I would recomend buying a good skimmer though. I just bought a Bashsea beckett skimmer and it is the best I have ever used. good luck

What size Bashsea?? They seem to only make skimmers for up to a few hundred gallons...

Actually Bashsea can make any size skimmer you need. Their standard models work on tanks up to 300+ gallons or so. However, they built one for my store that is 72" tall and 12" in diameter. Works great on our 1000 gallon fish system. We also have several smaller beckett skimmers from Bashsea on are our various other systems. If you need something big, they can do it. Bashsea specializes in custom filtration including skimmers, bio-reactors, de-nitrators, refugiums, media reactors, etc. We sell their stuff in our shop. If anyone would like more info on them, or would like a quote on a custom job, send me an email or a pm. Check out their site too, www.bashsea.com. Here's a link to our website with pricing on some of their items.

Here's a pic of the Skimmer in action at our old shop (it's now installed at our new shop). Note the 48" x 12" Bio Reactor too!
