Would it be a an actual pool filter if I used a sand filter?

yeah you can use a hayward pool filter. I run two on my pool. but bead filters work a little better. they are a little more pricey though

Ok ill start looking around at both

I dont know if that will be big enough, but that is a pretty kickass deal. Wish I would have found that this past summer for my 6k system.

Ight ill keep looking then I saw that and went 150 for pump and filter nice!

You could buy or make a fluidized bed filter. They handle a giant bioload for their size, inexpensive - but steal O2 and can return anoxic water in to system if not areated. THey can also crash with power outages, and changes in pump flow.

I am a big fan of bead filters for their stability and easy backwashing. They allow a much higher flow rate and drops are not a crucial. This one could cover your planned system. It is a basic but popular model. I have had two of this brand with no problems.
