Pool filters do very well on marine tanks. In fact, I'd say 99% of my big pool life support systems include a sandfilter (or sandfilters) like that. They are very good at getting junk out of the water column.

The whole Shedd is on one big sand filter. Wouldnt be surprised to see other large aquaria doing the same. The Shedd's is from the 20's or something ridiculous like that. They are now switching over (as of last year) to a couple smaller sand filters. Eager to see that system once its up and running, although I know that a couple of the guys there werent too happy about it.
