Sharks that should be banned from public sale

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and a ton of fish should be available that aren't

I also agree - micheal.

There are at least a dozen species of sharks that would make ideal "pet" sharks - if they were only available.

But their not due either to importation laws, the species is just fairly rare, or the sharks don't live in the normal collecting areas.

Sharks like -

The Freycinet's Epaulette (H.freycineti) - only grows to 30 inches long

The Hooded Epaulette (H.strahani) - also grows to about 32 inches long.

The Speckled Epaulette (H. trispeculare) - also 32 inches long.

The Arabian Epaulette (C. arabicum) - grows to 30 inches long.

The Ward's Wobbegong (O. wardi) - grows to 32 inches long

The Short-tailed Nurse (G. brevicaudatum) - grows to about 3 ft long.

The Mexican Horn (H. mexicanus) - grows to 28 inches

The Whitespotted Bullhead (H. ramalheira) - grows to 32 inches.

actually bans a strong word. maybe have inspections to see if you can safely keep the animal, and so its not buyable to every mug out there who cannot care properly for it

First off - jayl -Lemons are born at about 2' in length. And, they are very activity & aggressive sharks, even as pups.

Even though Scott Micheal recommends a pool of at least 10,000 gallons. The truth is that's still way too small for an adult. Adult Lemons max out at over 11', and regular reach 9' in length. Also Lemons are #10 on the Shark Attack List - with 10 cases of unprevoked attacks on humans.

And yes, I will take several years for them to reach their adult size - then a single adult will require a shark pool or tank that's at least 32,000 gallons(absolute minimum).

Plus this is a shark that should only be kept by very VERY experienced or professional shark keepers.

Thanks for the info! I actually wasn't talking about owning one, just thought they were fascinating!! I'll be sticking with the small stuff for a very long time!

I would love to see Chain Dogfish/catsharks in the hobby as well! Or Freycinet's epaulette! If ne one on this forum has seen, or knows of a supplier or hobbiest that has access to either let me know!

The list for ideal "pet" sharks was just a partial one.

The chain dog fish is another.

Also there a several carpet sharks, cat sharks & other sharks that could easily make this list.

A group of shark that kind of interests me is what I call the "Nurse" replacements. These are sharks that closely resemble the "nurse" in as an adult. Part of the idea would be if these shark were to be more common in the LFS - may the desire for having a "nurse shark" would complete fade.

These sharks include the following -

- Brown-banded Bamboo - the most common & largest (40inches)of the group.

- Arabian Bamboo - very rarely seen in the States - grows to 2.5'

- Bluegray Carpet - also rare in the States - also 2.5' long.

- Short-tailed Nurse - unheard in captive, within the U.S. - grows to less than 3'. - ideal replacement for the common Nurse - since it's the same genus(different species) - it could rightfully be called the "dwarf Nurse".

Thats funny I actually have an arabian bamboo in with my coral catsharks! A friend and myself ordered it as a brown spotted bamboo shark! Idk what the supplier was thinking... at first i thought it was a grey, but it has def turned out to be an arabian! Its a female, andI was thinking of trying to cross breed it with my male white spotted bamboo. But a "dwarf nurse" would be cool as hell man! That sounds very cool. I have never heard of such a thing. whats the scientific name?

Well - the true "dwarf" Nurse - is the short-tailed Nurse(Ginglynostoma brevicaudatum) - it's a sister species to the common Nurse. And chances are "if" this species has ever been imported to the U.S. - it was done so under the name of Nurse Shark. They are that similar. In fact the adult short-tail Nurse - would look exactly like a 2.5-3' long juvenile Nurse Shark.

And then there's the Nurse "replicas" - sharks that closely lookly a Nurse.
Of which the Arabian bamboo is one.

While the whitespotted has the same body plan as the arabian - it doesn't have the same look - as the whitespotted even has it's spots as an adult. - But then you likely already know this.

Actually there are at least 3 Bamboos that make the list as Nurse "replicas" - the Arabian, the Brown-banded, & the Grey.

Also - just wondering about how much you paid for the Arabian Bamboo?

It was $100. & there hasnt been one on that list since. I keep waiting and watching though, in case there are others. I will order as many as i can get next time around.
if i ever get a few more i will let you know... if your interested.

What do u think about the cross breed idea? i mean i have seen banded and spotted crosses before, they look pretty cool. i wonder what the arabian/whitespot would look like. it would prob be a smaller shark with spots.hmmmm
