Shell Dweller "Nano" Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK cool, I bought the black and white "Cichlid" sand and paid $28 before I saw your post, haha.
They all seemed to be the same price online.

BTW - I got the tank today too. Nice and cloudy with water and sand in it now.
Typical fish head, I can't possibly NOT start putting a tank together as soon as I get it.

some great advice in this thread. Shellies are simply the best haha. The gold ocellatus is the most entertaining. I have a colony of black speciosus as well and honestly the babies are a problem. I feed them to my other fish. Another great shellie is the similis. i have them and they are a great colony builder, basically just a lil more agro multies. Have fun bc shellies are a great lil fish.

I don't have species picked out yet.
I don't want to get ahead of myself as I am still trying to track down some rummynose and pristella tets to complete my Sev tank.
Once those are done, I will research some species more in depth, start shelling and decorating, cycle the tank, then stock.

I will keep this thread going as there is ALOT of great info and I know I will have more questions.

Actually, here is one:
Do shellies get pissed off/does it affect their behaviour when you have to rearrange the shells?

I move shells sometimes to clean, or even just re-arrange things to get a new look. I try not to do it if I think they are about to, or have just spawned. I don't think it pisses them off or anything, then you get to see them pick their shells, dig in and get everything the way the like all over again.

Yuck, I traded out water 4 times last night, then realized that about 12 pounds wasn't enough sand, put in a few more, and now cloudy again...as in I wasted time swapping water if I was just gonna put more in, lol.

I put in some shells that I collected in Sanibel Island, FL just for appearance now. I will get a pic up as soon as the milkiness is gone.

Nice and clear as of Friday night.
I put my HY511 tetras in there, as they will no longer be in the 55 anyhow, to start cycling the tank.
Kind of at a standstill until something happens with the Neo shells, or I get tired of waiting to get these. I still have to finish stocking my 55g though - two tetra types I chose, happen to be the more difficult ones to find at any LFS...
story of my life :)

Real neo shells would be cool, but escargot shells from a gourmet food supply store look as good, and they are cheap, like $7 for 24. I use escargot and smaller snail shells that come in bags of "assorted sea shells" from the dollar store
