well depending on the mix, ya know boys and girls and such... I figure one or two males with a few females with lots of shells

200, well there life might be a little short. But seriously there is never a magic number, just put in some (say 1-2 males, 3-4 females) let them mate, raise the kids and keep enough that everyone stays happy. Just make sure the filtering is good enough.

i heard to use ground coral substrate, can you buy that sort of stuff that can be used for marine or is there a better option

crushed coral or (agronite) it is for fresh and or salt water just rinse it good with fresh water b4 putting in the tank.

use sand for shell dwellers. anything used in saltwater like agronite. it lets the shellies dig. the fish will never get big enough to move te coral.
