Shipping Disaster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I prefer not to use USPS because of a couple of similar instances. I ship the majority of my fish via UPS or Fedex with no problems. I will only ship USPS if the buyer insists on using their service. I truly hope your fish arrive tomorrow. I had a box of juvenile Festae lost by USPS for the better part of a week. The box finally arrived wet and a little crushed. But thanks to the great packaging by the seller all the fish arrived alive. So don't give up hope. Like Ryan stated above, I've also heard of people waiting for fish that were never shipped in the first place. I'm not saying this is what happened to you though. Hopefully you purchased from a reputable person. Good luck!

Last time I was going to have fish shipped through USPS was when I was buying off of another member here. When they went to ship the desk jockey shook the box to see what was in it(since it was labled live animals) and not only ended up rupturing the bag but killed everything from the trauma of being shooken so hard. The seller was nice enough to refund my money but since I was buying an entire batch of fry I was unable to get them replaced.

Shipping Priority is a risk with live fish. I have chosen Priority with live fish with no problems but depends on the fish. Priority generally is 2-3 days but is not guaranteed as you found out. A lot of factors play into whether it gets there in 2-3 days. Weather in the area can cause delays like floods or hurricanes. Sometimes when Priority is shipped in your own box it can get mixed with Parcel Post which is very slow. Until someone catches that it is Priority but then its been 5-6 days and then it gets reprocessed. I ship all Priority in my business. Even though I print labels online with Priority on the label I still put USPS Priority stickers on the box so there is no mistake it goes Parcel Post.

Yea. I want know more until tommorow. I personally think they lost it and I have to beleive that they are liable if I dont receive anything at all. It hasent been scanned for almost a week. Something is going on, but even if it got lost I cant figure out why it wouldnt get scanned if its in Africa it seems like they would scan it and tell me its in Africa. USPS has got some serious explaining to do.

Because afaik, USPS scanning is not the same as UPS/FedEx scanning. It doesn't seem as sophisticated or precise, at least from my own experience tracking USPS. It used to be that they would only scan an item when you dropped it off and when it arrived at your local post office, and any time between that just said "In transit." Even though they've improved their tracking system, there will still be long periods (durin train or truck transit, for instance) where the tracking updates go black for a couple days.

You have to remember that USPS processes more mail in a week than UPS handles in a year. Pinpointing one single package is going to be a lot harder for USPS than UPS/FedEx. It goes back to that old saying, you get what you pay for. UPS and FedEx may be more expensive but they are usually able to track your package down to the truck/sorting facility it's in. Of course, this doesn't mean there aren't issues with those companies, but at least if a box is lost or delayed they can tell you where it is most of the time.

UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!!!!! Day 8 and the Fish showed up randomly at the post office today!!!!!! All 8 are ALIVE!!!!! Let me say that one more tie because it felt so GOOD! ALL 8 ARE ALIVE!!!!!!! Thanks to everyone for the stories, and encouraging words and even the discouraging words!!!
