SHOALING AFRICAN PIKES

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nah i'm not a carpenter but those pics to me dont look like a 16'' african pike is looks like a foot long. i'm not a forum gangster neither, and 3 african pikes would be perfect in a 180 gal.:banher:

I have to agree with caribemob-in the wild they can get to two feet but very rarely exceed one foot-A friend of mine has a school of 4 in his 125 gallon and are very happy fish-fun to see them eat other fish. I wonder where some folks get their info from-some of the comments made about Odoes size are kind of "out there"

DB Junkie-So your saying your Odoes are unhappy in a 300 gallon tank-Sounds odd to me I mean even if they grew as big as they do in the wild, 300 gallons would be more than enough room.

BTW-to the oringinal OP-Riverwonders has some and their service was awesome.

smpage-they do better in schools-and why one Odoe in a 180 gallon tank? Guys the fish maxes out at 12 inches.

You're right. Maybe happiness is smashing into the tank when startled. Maybe idling around all day without ever actually swimming is exactly what they do in the wild. Maybe your buddies fish would act exactly the same if you pitched them in an 8x8 pond.

So I'm very curious to know why is it that they stay significantly smaller in captivity then in the wild?

If the original poster knew 3 would be perfect in a 180 then why the thread?

Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that a lot of Characins die prematurely in captivity due to improper care resulting in smaller sizes then in the wild.

Agreed, I've got two in my 120 and I feel super bad about. Very, VERY skittish and my smaller one has the busted up nose to prove it.

:nilly:LIKE I SAID I had one over 10'' before and he never bumped his head on glass in his 75 gallon, i put plants there thats all, of course a 8x8 pond would be better, i mean the more water the better but even in the wild they don't get that big. i started the thread so i could get info from fellow fish keepers, not people stating the obvious. i mean i have common sense, and the guy with two in a 120 and there very skittish well im sorry buddy its the fight in the fish

Yup, and you had one in there, not two. So how is that an argument for what I said? If you're going to do it, do it. Clearly, the advice given is not good enough for you. You'll never be able to convince me that a school of them in a 180 is the right thing to do.
