Assuming you are not doing a planted tank T8 is more than enough light. I even have T8 on a 40g breeder that works just fine for the plants I have, but for a true planted tank or anything deeper you would probably want T5.

If it's the type with the curved reflector that sticks out past the bulbs, you can get away with just sitting it on top of the tank, assuming you already have glass tops. Otherwise, just build a simple box, and screw the fixture to the inside of it.

My husband came up with this clever idea for lighting on our 8' tank:

Hinged lighting fixture - Open

Closed

Even without a canopy, the plumbing is all hidden behind the light fixture

This is what it looks like behind the light fixture

which ligt or bulbs is he using i like the way that looks as far as the brightness. it looks like if it was under a canopy it would really shine

I too have used shop lights in my fishroom for years without any disappointment but the light doesn't seem to penetrate to the deeper depths of the taller tanks. This can mak it even more difficult to enjoy your bottom dwellers.

I have a shop light on my 55g tank. The tank is built in the wall, so mine is hung with chains and s-hooks. I did spend a little bit extra money and purchased bulbs specifically for plants at Home Depot. So, I have 80 watts of light and the plants have been doing well.
