shop light for tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
is a 4' shop light *actually* 48" long? I built a hood for my 55 gallon, and its exactly 48" long inside. I'd like to have room for 48" tubes, but if the fixture is 48 1/4 long or something it won't fit and i'd have to go with a 36".

If you're talking about a t-8 or t-12, it will be too long. You could go with a t-5 fixture, as a 4ft fixture is actually slightly shorter than 4 feet.

I don't have t5 dollars, so I'll probably end up using a 36" fixture.

How expensive are 24" and 36" bulbs? Maybe I could do 2 24" fixtures and offset them slightly.

For my 6 foot 125 gal tank lights I got 2 36" fluorescent fixtures from homedepot for like 10 bucks each and then attached them to a wood light box that sits on top of my hood. Then I wanted some fancy bulbs so I got some t-8 power glows. Gives the tank a pink hue which I'm not too fond of but the African chiclids look quite nice though.

I've been using 4' shop lights in my 100G community tank for awhile with no problems. My canopy completely encloses the light fixture so you cant even tell its a shop light. As far as light intensity goes, my tank is 24" tall and plenty bright. You can increase your light penetration by switching to a higher color temp bulb. A standard full spectrum usually runs about 3000 Kelvin. When I switched to 6500K my tank appeared twice as bright.
Higher Kelvin=Bluer light=Deeper water penetration.
I have 2 fixtures with 2 bulbs a peace at 40w per.
Hopefully the pics help.

you dont use a screen to cover the lights? would the moisture or splash effect the fixture?
