Thank you! Yes they are hard to tell but if your looking at a batch that came together they should all be roughly the same length and height. The short bodies kinda stand out because they lack the length but are still the same height. Like the on the OP posted... I'm sure the rest(its siblings) that it was kept with had longer bodies and thats why that one stood out. Hopefully my 2 spawn and I can find some sb's from them.

To the OP having a personal preference and personal feelings about what a fish breeder would do doesn't make someone naive. Fish on Fire stated something that a lot of responsible breeders would do, which is far more likely than line breeding for the short body trait. I also agree with ecoli73 I personally don't see the short body trait being expressed to any great degree, which you would see in a line bred fish. So it stands to reason since the Oscar is barely expressing the short body trait and it was in a mass shipment of regular Oscars it's a deformed Oscar not a line bred short body. That's just a far more logical conclusion. Mind you this is coming from someone who likes the short body trait expressed on certain fish.

Couldn't have said it better myself

I strongly disagree with the overwhelming opinion that short body Cichlids are a result of non culling practices. I am one of many who find that the short body craze is not a craze, but a practice that adhere to aquatic fish keepers/breeders wants and desires. I'm not a young guy, and I've been keeping fish for over 40 years. I do not endorse the practice of tattooing fish or dyed fish. Short body fish are NOT Frankenfish, but specific strains of Cichlids being bread for the specific trait. Listen I understand that some people don't like them, that's fine. Their are things in this hobby I don't like. I don't rant and rave about it, we like what we like and that's that. People who think that they can judge other people for enjoying a certain kind of fish, shouldn't be in the hobby. Everybody enjoy this wonderful hobby and stop pissing on everyone's Cheerios.
