Hello, I just acquired a 4 inch short body Texas cichlid with really nice colors, I’m not sure about the sex of the fish though, very long fins so I wanna say male but a very predominant black spot on the dorsal fin so I’m abit on the fence about it , anyone that can help sex?

Could you get vent pics?
Hard to say male or female, short body makes the head shape hard to use as a determining factor and I’m not sure about the black spot in this case.

I would say female, looking at the dorsal fin it does have a darker patch. I also think I see a bit of an egg tube in the middle photo.

I’ll try and have a vented picture for the weekend

Now that I take a second look at the picture it does looks like an egg tube slightly in the middle

It was a simple question, that's what forums are for. I was unfamiliar with that variant so i asked more about it. After doing some research I've found parrot cichlids were created by selectively breeding for the short body gene as well. The connection isn't that big a stretch.
