Should/cCould I get an aro ? crash course

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks guys... any other advice you can give me are they difficult to pellet train ? And special water requirements high flow rate ?

Whats growth rate like
Ime not difficult. At my lfs, when I worked there the aros ate readily. And I kept one silver and he ate within a week. Aros like calm waters. Growth rate varies from species to species. With a black I'd say 1-2" a month. With a lei and jar 1" a month.

I have a Leichardti and a Silver, both are cool fish. In my experience Leichardti are more insectivore wile Silvers are more pescivore. My Leichardti will not eat live fish my Silver will. I feed my Leichardti superworms and crickets. My Silver will eat anything shrimp, worms, fish, pellets but my Leichardti is very fussy and will go on hunger strikes for weeks at a time. If I had to do it over I would not get another Leichardti, mine wasn't worth the money IMO. If you ask me get a $25.00 silver or a Black. I don't particularly like the look of adult Blacks but that's just my preference.

thanks for the input guys.

So what causes the drop eye ?

Idk a lot of theories and speculation on what causes it. Mine has one drop eye the other is fine and it eats mostly from the surface so who knows.

I agree with Aquanero there is a lot of theories but here is mine the Aro is built for the surface, and in the wild they are focused on what's above, but in the aquarium they are forced to look down especially if they have to eat off of the substrate. I'm going to stick to this no matter what others say lol :)

Other than LFS are there any online sources you guys trust for aros ?

Wetspot. They have some available.

Check locally too, In my area silvers turn up on craigslist pretty often. Usually people buy these cute little babies and then realize they cant prperly house them. Seems like most are around 16" - 18" when they figure that out, lol. Like anything else some think they are worth way too much and others sell at a reasonable cost.

What species are you interested in? Most Silvers are farmed, the others are mostly wild caught so that's where the big price discrepancy comes from. Monster in NY or Aquascape has 3" Silvers for 35, 3" Leichardti for 280, 3" Jardini for 150 to give you an idea of cost.

Im thinking its either a black or a lei.

Im gonna be moving the fish amd tanks about 3 or 4 hours in a couple of months would it be bestter to get the aro after ?

I was thinking of aquascape... even after the move i could always drive there
