It's a nice set up you have there m8. I would suggest painting or covering the back and sides of the tank, which would darken the tank which will help the skittish of the reds. Also put some more plants or something for them to hide if they do get skitted out. Maybe get rid of about half of them, that would give the others more room as they grow, remember reds can grow to 9 to 10 inches. This is only my opinion.

Anyway good luck on what ever you decide.

give it a shot

i know im a bit overstocked but i've seen a few people on here with 10 in a 125.
I'll give these guys a few more months and wait until aro season comes a long. i'll probably decide then.

maybe it's just the pics, but they don't look like their 6" or so... they look smaller... I would paint the tank as said earlier and maybe a few more plants and keep them for at least 6 more months.. and also spend some more time around them... I've got 17 in my 220 and the smallest one is 6" or so and they are quite docile, meaning they don't freak out... If i walk up to them they are like a happy dog and go to the top to wait for food. They were socialized...

Hope this helps.. good luck man.

Well my point really wasn't about the money but why would you waste a nice fish like a Arowana as a feeder but if you want some numbers. I have 5 piranhas and I would need 5 jars because they would easily eat one a piece. So at $65 thats pretty cheap because there more where I live closer to $85. But at $65 for 5 of them thats $325 for one day of feeding. I make pretty good money myself but I doubt most of us are going to blow $300 plus on one feeding. Sounds dumb to me.

You can get one small and grow it out, a ~2ft fish can feed piranahs for a while :) you can also enjoy a fat mean eating machine while growing the jar out :) in few months it'll get from few inches to 1ft+ but by then you'll probably want to keep both, I know I would (as long as I can properly house it)

convict cichlids are fine, I just got myself a pair, hopefully they'll breed soon and there will a good supply of feeders :D

whats a good way to cover the back and the sides while the tank is still setup. i know if i do it while they are in the tank there is going to be nothing but chimples galore when im done with it.

You can just cover the out side of the tank, anything that's not reflective and hard color should work. Pet stores should have those black or blue color plastic background rolls, just get a section thats long enough to cover your tank and tape it down. or you can paint the glass but that's a bit more difficult if you don't have access to the back.
