Why do you have pairs of aggressive cichlids living together this always spells trouble save the gt and fic the problem before it happens again

You can get by with pairs, but you definitely shouldn't have another GT, especially male, living in the tank, too.

To the OP, if you put the fish down, the best way I've found is a method I first read about on here, which is to wrap the fish in some paper towels and place it in the freezer. The cold will put the fish down quickly and it's relatively painless compared to other options.

(Sorry, missed your last post. Sorry about the outcome. I need to do a better job of paying attention to OP dates on these threads.)

^ placing a live fish in the freezer is a slow and uncomfortable death as the fish doesn't die immediately, and it's gonna be suffocating all the way thru.

The correct way to do it is cold shock. Take water from the tank in a container and add a layer of ice cubes on top of it (it must be a lot of ice, enough to cover the whole surface) then slowly stir the mix until the ice is almost completely melted... touch the water to make sure it's super cold.

Take the fish out of its warm tank and place it in the cold water as quick as possible. It will die immediately from cold shock, no waiting two hours for the fish to 'freeze', the sudden, extreme drop in temperature will do the job in seconds.

Wow you guys are brutal. Clove oil when properly done is a very humane way to euthanize fish. They go to sleep slowly, then you administer the final lethal dose and its done. A peaceful way for the fish to go.

use clove oil, add alittle bit and the fish will goto sleep, add more and he will die, quick and painless with no stress

lol please. don't be a big hypocrite and call it "humane" so you can feel better about doing it. truth is there's no "humane" way of killing any animal, yet we do. Whatever is fastest works for me, definitely not slowly freezing or swimming in drugs until you pass out.

Forcing your fish to watch a marathon of Dancing with the Stars will do the trick. Though it can also be a slow and painful death. This is my wife's brand of torture. I'm still recovering.

I agree. What is refered to as humane by most people is what is easiest on the human psyche. That usually means putting the fish somewhere where you don't have to actually lay your hands on it and where you don't have to watch it die.

Freezer is seriously mean. That's not fast at all. My significant other tried to do that once with a fish that was just in serious pain. I took it out after a couple minutes when I found out what she was doing.....and guess what.....still alive. I ended it quickly.

Best way is a quick hit on the head. Might not make you feel good about yourself, but it's over a lot quicker for the animal.
