Should I trust Petco/Petshop /etc with getting fish?

Another vote for "it depends". I would go to the fish store several times to check on the health of their fish. You'll be able to tell pretty quickly if the store constantly has ich or if the fish are relatively healthy. If you're satisfied that the store takes good care of their fish, then I'd feel comfortable buying. BE SURE to quarantine, though!!!!

Exactly as the post above said, if you quarantine, then you can get fish from anywhere and there won't be any risk other than losing that specific fish if anything happens to it

The best looking JD pair I have ever owned came from a petsmart and they were beautiful. Just check for diesease and make sure the fish is not sick and it should be fine. You can usually get pretty good deals at big stores like that to. I got 3 fronts once for $4 and 5 rams for $2 =]

Admittedly every fish i own came from PETCO...while i worked there. Then again maybe 5% were because they looked nice. Majority were in bad shape, sickly, or were ordered because the manager thought the name sounded cool :screwy:.

I would support them over bad private shops, but overall i will never buy anything at a chain store again. Luckily i have decent shops where i am, and like to support them.

Chain stores are good for donating money to dog/cat rescues, and for making corporate pockets fat. They have no place selling aquatics and exotics IMO.

I boycott them also. In my area there is Petland and PETCO both 20 minutes away if no traffic.
Neither carries 30 gallon long tanks (36 inches) which I was looking for at one time and have weird policies like they only sell male mice and rats no females (imagine so people can't breed them themselves for feeders).

One is ich land anyway . I will never set foot in either and prefer to drive 40 minutes to a mom/pop place which I like and they carry 30 gallon long tanks and both sexes of mice/rats lol (I have no interest in keeping either but selling only males I found stupid and insulting):WHOA:

The petsmart near me is pretty nice, but the Petco sucks. I got my GT from Pestmart and he turned out fine.

Are you serious? They don't sell both sexes because too many ********* would be breeding them. It helps to keep strays and populations under control. Stupid and insulting......wow. Also, not every store sells every size tank that every person wants. That post is like me saying I'm going to boycott Subway, because they sell healthy food, which doesn't include hamburgers. Because I find that stupid and insulting......

It has been my experience that the Petco's/big stores just don't have the variety of fish I'm looking for. Most of the tanks I have seen appear to be in good shape with the livestock equally so.

I would always advocate to any buyer of LTF to support the local mom and pop type LFS in your area. Chances are that you are going to get a healthier fish from someone who's livelyhood depends on repeat business.

Just my .02

They dont sell female mice because this way you buy feeders from them not breed your own .They sell frozen feeders at absurd prices.
Male mice SMELL not the ideal choice if your going to have a mouse as a pet .
They simply do not want people breeding their own feeders as no mouse population problem as they simply become feeders.
Never heard of "stray' out of control white mouse population problem lol.

30 gallong long tanks are standard in most pet stores they for some reason do not carry them .I asked them when I first moved to Florida if they could order me one and I would pay in advance .
They said no they don't do that and I said okay you lost my business.

It is a pet store after all .The going to subway which does not carry hamburgers to begin with example you put out there makes no sense. I wouldn't ask for a hamburger there but again would ask for a fish tank in a PET STORE.

You're totally missing the point. I have seen white mice populations, fyi. They're not like cats and dogs that you just see walking down the street. ;) People dump small animals all the time, trust me. They sell ALL their small animals this way (single sex). They only sell them as pets, no feeders, which is why they don't want people breeding them. I grew up having mice, as well as rats, as pets. If you take care of them, and clean them properly, there is no smell at all. Great child pets, too. As far as the tank, you can only stock SO MANY things that customers want. Eventually, you run out of square footage, and have to cut back on slow sellers. 30's are not a popular size. You can get any size larger and smaller than that there, you just picked the one size they don't have. Try to view it from a retail standpoint. You can't please everyone.

Not to mention, what does any of your problems with them have to do with trusting them for fish????
