I actually like buying fish from petsmart. It is hard to beat the 14 day return policy. If you look on the days that they receive fish your chances are better on getting a nice fish that you like. They get so many fish in, because of sales volume, that you usually have quite a few to chose from. My favorite way to purchase fish though is from www.cichlidboker.com. Don is the guys name who runs the business and he is always more than willing to talk about different fish over the phone. I have probably talked to this guy for hours about fish. He is a fish lover like me, so it is nice getting an experts viewpoint on fish and compatibility.
Should I trust Petco/Petshop /etc with getting fish?

Just to prove that convicts will spawn ANYWHERE, I was in a Petsmart over the weekend, and one tank that was crowded with convicts had a pair in the back valiantly defending a brood of young.

before I was that experienced with fish I got some nice stuff from Petsmart that are still alive an well in my tanks.
with that being said now Id rather buy from a specialty store or from local fishkeepers as usually you can find stuff chain stores wont have and usually healthier

My thoughts are this: If you are an experienced fish keeper and knowledgable impulse buys are now almost extinct. Whe i am interested in a fish i observe it on numerous occasions at diff times of the day. (Normally *unless rare* fish dont sell too quickly) I do that just to ensure health and aggression level. i agree totally that fish specific stores tend to be much pricier (pardon spelling) than corporate stores such as Petco or Petsmart. I work at a Petco currently and all i can say is the fish only stores tend to have healthier fish. It's common for a Petco/smart to have ich in almost all tanks. That's due to company policy (some are just too stupid to comprehend) and also man-hours. Two HUGE pet-peeves of mine. Why we have fancy goldfish and cichlids in the same system is beyond my comprehension!!!!!!! CONSTANT ICH! Un fish related but im a bird specialist at my store and i get possibly 4 hrs a week of out of cage time for my birds!!!!! reCOCKuless!!!!!!!! And we wonder why birds are mean or have plucked themselves basically nude!!!!!! But enough venting on my company lol, all things aside if the fish seems healthy and youve observed it i find no reason not to purchase from a corporate store like Petco/smart. Hell i've bought fish from wal mart lol!
I worked at a petco (in the fish room)and the fish were great. Now i buy some things at petsmart because petco is going down hill.
